Actor Jamie Lee Curtis was awkwardly snubbed by rival nominee Angela Bassett after she won an Oscar at the 95th annual Academy Awards.
Curtis won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film Everything Everywhere All At Once, dominating over Bassett who was also up for the same prize.
Bassett, 64, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
But when it was announced that Curtis had won, Bassett stood out as one of the only people to not stand up and applaud the win.
Social media users took to Twitter to play out the awkward moment.
Footage shows Bassett remaining in her chair with a grim look on her face as she watched Curtis take the stage.
Some fans argued Bassett should have won the award and described the moment as "heartbreaking".
"The most upsetting, heartbreaking moment of the night for me. You can see it in Angela’s face. I felt it. It hit me," one user wrote.
"Wow, they actually snubbed #AngelaBassett…You could see the defeated, broken look on Bassett’s face…," another wrote.
However others thought Bassett's reaction was "kinda shady" given how every nominee hopes to win.
“Angela Bassett not standing up for Jamie Lee Curtis is kinda shady. I get you’re upset for not winning but damn…," one weighed in.
"Angela Bassett wasn't even happy for the winner either, like her fellow nominees, like your supposed to be, everyone thinks they should win...but what a sore loser attitude with no class," another said.
Speaking at the Oscars red carpet prior to announcing the awards, Bassett said receiving an Academy Award for her work in the 2022 action film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever would be "extraordinarily special".
"Ryan Coogler, the cast, the crew, the producers, all just had excellence as the North Star," she said.
"Chadwick Boseman, whose our leader in all of this, now, in spirit...we assembled again to make a movie that he would be proud of, and that would honour him and that would honour the fans."
Airing on Monday morning in Australia, Curtis was handed her statue in the first hour of the three-hour long Oscars telecast.
“I know it looks like I’m standing up here by myself, but I’m not, I am hundreds of people,” Curtis said after accepting her award in acknowledgement of her team and staff on the film.
The actress was also up against her co-star in the film Stephanie Hsu, as well Kerry Condon in The Banshee of Inisherin, and Hong Chau in The Whale.
The daughter of Hollywood golden era stars Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, Curtis was not considered a firm favourite leading into the ceremony.
Bassett, who was the first actor ever nominated for a role in a Marvel movie, was considered a favourite by some insiders after winning the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in January.
Curtis is primarily known for her roles in horror films like the Halloween franchise, and her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once was her first ever Oscar nomination after a 45-year career
