Furiosa FIRST LOOK: Chris Hemsworth is unrecognisable in a long red beard and prosthetic nose while filming Mad Max prequel in Sydney alongside his wife Elsa Pataky and three children
Chris Hemsworth was hard to spot on the bustling film set of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa.
The action-movie Adonis, 38, was almost unrecognisable in a red beard and prosthetic nose as he filmed the post-apocalyptic blockbuster at a remote site in Kurnell, south of Sydney's CBD, on Saturday.
Gone was Chris' iconic blond Thor wig, replaced by a head of fiery locks, while his eyebrows appeared to be tinted red for the role.
Chris' day on set was a family affair, with his wife Elsa Pataky, 45, their twin sons Tristan and Sasha, eight, and daughter India Rose, 10, and Chris' father Craig Hemsworth, 67, all taking part in the film.
Elsa and her sons were seen strolling around the eye-popping set dressed in dishevelled rags, while Craig wore a leather biker jacket and distressed black jeans.
Also spotted on set were Australian actors Angus Sampson, who starred in Mad Max: Fury Road, and Ian Roberts, who has not appeared in the franchise so far.
Hoards of extras were also seen wandering around the set, some clad in leather bikie apparel while others wore dusty, tattered garments.
Some actors were covered in eclectic body paint, while several others sported prosthetic facial mutations.
One person who wasn't hard to locate amid the hubbub was director Miller, who stood out like a sore thumb in his bright red windbreaker and black scarf.
Photos from the set also reveal a glimpse at the modified steampunk-style vehicles that will appear in the flick, including one which featured a small prison carriage and musical horns jutting out of the sides.
Surrounding the film set was a sea of large marquees, trailers and trucks.
Some of the dystopic sets were also spotted nearby, including a newly constructed, medieval style portcullis.
Large green screens also punctuated the set, suggesting the film will include plenty of special effects when it hits cinemas.
This is not the first time the Mad Max production team have filmed in and around the Kurnell area.
The famous sand hills of Kurnell featured in the third Mad Max film, Beyond Thunderdome, in 1985 as the location for a crashed 747.
Mad Max Furiosa began production in Broken Hill in April.
It tells the origin story of a young Imperator Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who rose to fame as the star of Netflix hit The Queen's Gambit.
Furiosa was originally portrayed by Charlize Theron in the 2015 blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road.
Chris and the Hemsworth clan's roles in the movie have not yet been revealed.
Franchise creator Miller is also back as director and co-writer of Furiosa, alongside Nico Lathouris, as well as his long-time producing partner Doug Mitchell.
Miller has described the prequel as 'a saga' that will be told over a 15-year period, which is much different from Fury Road, which spanned three days in its timeframe.
Meanwhile, a development application (DA) to the Sutherland Shire Council indicates that filming in Kurnell is expected to last until October.
Last year, former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced the highly anticipated Mad Max prequel would be filmed locally.
Berejiklian said it would be the 'largest film ever to be filmed here', creating 850 jobs and injecting at least $350million into the local economy.
She went on to praise the movie's cast and crew, and said the production would 'showcase Australian talent at its best'.
'Chris, who's made Australia his home, he's a global superstar and works here in NSW, and I couldn't feel prouder about him and his generation of actors that are really continuing to put Australia on the map,' she said.
Mad Max Furiosa is scheduled for release in 2024.
