Paul McCartney pays tribute to Johnny Depp during Glastonbury headline set - 9Honey Celebrity

Paul McCartney has used his headlining set at the iconic Glastonbury festival to pay tribute to his friend Johnny Depp.

While the former Beatle performed the song 'My Valentine', a black-and-white video of Depp – in the song's original video clip – was projected onto the screen.

The choice appears to be a show of support and solidarity for Depp, who recently was involved in a six-week highly-publicised defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

He didn't directly address the trial, but the crowd cheered as Depp's image appeared on-screen.

This isn't actually the first time the singer has referenced Depp on stage this year – back in May, he showed the same footage during a concert on his Get Back Tour before the trial's verdict had been determined.

The footage itself shows the Pirates of the Caribbean star with Natalie Portman, while he plays guitar and translates the lyrics into sign language.

McCartney, 80, has made history with his performance, as the oldest-ever act to headline the festival.

Some people on social media have criticised McCartney's support of Depp. "Imagine how hard it is to explain to a 14 year old boy, who sees much of life through TikTok, that Johnny Depp probably isn't the idol he's presented as," one person wrote.

"I'd done that. And then Paul McCartney, one of his heroes, blasts his image out at Glastonbury."

Others have pointed out that female artists at the festival have used their sets to discuss the recent Supreme Court ruling that overturns legal abortions.

"On one stage Megan Thee Stallion is encouraging the crowd to shout 'my body, my mother f---ng choice'," someone shared on Twitter. "On the other stage Paul McCartney is showing a video of Johnny Depp."

Olivia Rodrigo dedicated the song "F--- You" to the Supreme Court, Phoebe Bridgers led her audience in a chant of "f--- the Supreme Court", and Billie Eilish told the crowd "today is a really, really dark day for women in the US".

McCartney brought special guests out on stage for his performance: Bruce Springsteen and Dave Grohl. He also honoured his late bandmate John Lennon and performed with George Harrison's ukulele.
