Netflix says Squid Game is back for season two. Here's what we know about the next series - ABC News

It was Netflix's most-watched series ever — now Squid Game is officially back for round two.

In just 27 days last year, the first season reached a massive 111 million fans according to the streaming service, beating period drama Bridgerton.

While we don't know exactly when season two of the hit Korean thriller will be released, some hints about the plot have dropped.

Here's what we know so far.

Wait, I've forgotten Season One. Remind me?

It's a nine-part dark drama telling the story of contestants, who are strapped for cash for various reasons, signing on to play child-like games for a massive amount of money (45.6 billion Won or $50 million)

Catch is, these games often have fatal consequences.

Seong Gi-hun is the main character: divorced with a young daughter and a big gambling problem. After he wins money off a mysterious businessman in a subway game, he ends up at the main event.

(And fair warning, spoilers below).

The result? Gi-hun survives the violent games and unmasks the elderly man, Oh Il-nam, playing alongside them as its creator, before the old man dies.

But in the finale, as Gi-hun is on his way to see his daughter in the US, he spots the same recruiter in the subway.

The mystery businessman escapes, but not before Gi-hun gets the card and calls the number, asking who is running the game.

So that sets us up for season two.

What clues do we have on season two?

There's been a little bit teased out by writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk.

In a letter released by Netflix, Hwang said Gi-hun and the black-masked character The Front Man will return.

And that salesman who entices players? Hwang said: "the man in the suit with ddakji might be back."

Hwang said: "You'll also be introduced to Young-hee's boyfriend."

His name is Cheol-su — and he's unlikely to be friendly.

Just how popular was it?

It was so popular that South Korean internet provider SK Broadband sued Netflix to pay for costs from increased network traffic and maintenance work, thanks to the surge in viewers.

And it easily beat costume drama Bridgerton, which was streamed by 82 million accounts in its first 28 days.

Netflix's 28-day debut figures do include any account that watched an episode for at least two minutes.

But the series had an undeniable impact, inspiring knock-offs, countless memes, costumes and even kickstarting sales of green tracksuits.

And it won a string of awards.

The series won three of the four awards it was up for at the Screen Actors Guild, missing out to Succession for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series.

It was the first time actors in a non-English language series took home those wins.

And O Yeong-su won a Golden Globe for his work as Oh Il-nam.

Netflix co-chief executive and chief content officer Ted Sarandos said last year they were surprised by Squid Game's success.

When will we see Squid Game season two?

There's no release date yet — and given it took 12 years for Squid Game to make it from the page to the screen, it might not be a quick turnaround.

In a Variety interview last year, Hwang said he didn't have "well-developed plans" for the next season.

"If I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I'd consider using a writers' room and would want multiple experienced directors," he said.
