Harry and Meghan fly home during Platinum Jubilee celebrations - Sky News Australia

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly flew back to America during the final Platinum Jubilee event after being largely absent from the celebration, which marked Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years on the throne.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly left the United Kingdom before the celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years as monarch had officially wrapped up.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are understood to have missed the Queen’s final balcony appearance by jetting off back to the United States an hour before the Platinum Jubilee Pageant begun on Sunday.

The Queen, who was greeted by huge cheers, trumpets and a rendition of the national anthem, had been forced to withdraw from several events during the four-day Platinum Jubilee celebration due to "episodic mobility issues".

"While I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all; and I remain committed to serving you in the best on my ability, supported by my family," the Queen said in a statement released by Buckingham Palace on Twitter.

Prince Harry and Ms Markle attended the service of thanksgiving for the Queen’s reign at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday.

The couple flew from California with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, earlier in the week.

Their attendance marked their first public appearance in the UK since stepping back from royal duties in 2020.

Ms Markle, in a cream coloured dress and a matching hat, smiled and waved at the crowds before her and Prince Harry took their seats in the second row of the congregation.

The pair sat next to Princess Eugenie, Princess Beatrice and their husbands Jack Brooksbank and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

The Sussex's were also not present at the Platinum Party at the Palace, which saw performances from Sir Rod Stewart, Craig David, Duran Duran and Alicia Keys.

The couple's relationship with other family members has been particularly strained since they ditched the UK for the US and following a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Sky News Australia correspondent Annelise Nielsen said she thinks it was intentional the couple sat out of a number of major events.

“I think that was pretty deliberate – that they didn’t want to be drawing attention away from anything,” she said.

“When speaking to people here – the diehard royal fans – a lot of them say that they are disappointed in how Harry and Meghan have conducted their step back from royal life, that they don’t agree with many of their criticisms of the Royal Family."

“But they do say … he is the Queen’s grandson and so there should be respect for the monarch and in that instance it does mean her heirs as well.”

Prince Harry and Ms Markle spent much of their time in the UK at Frogmore Cottage where they threw a "relaxed" party for Lilibet's first birthday.
