She’s one of the most beloved children’s character however a joke tweet had parents criticising this particular instalment as “horrendous” and “woeful”.
A book in the Peppa Pig series,Peppa Pig: Peppa Goes to Ireland has earned harsh criticisms for its portrayal of Ireland and Irish people.
The 32-page book features the famous family’s trip to Ireland and is described as the “perfect introduction to Ireland for little Peppa fans”.
A wave of disapproval was sparked by a tweet by Irish author, Irish author Kevin Power, on Twitter. While he admitted he was joking in a later tweet, several of his followers agreed with him in the comments.
“I read this to my daughter at bedtime. It features no Irish characters, just English characters enjoying themselves in Ireland, thus re-inscribing 800 years of colonialism,” he wrote. “Might call Liveline about it tomorrow.”
In response to his tweets, some of his followers agreed that the book promoted Irish stereotypes like the family going to an Irish-dancing festival, with the inclusion of recurring character Miss Rabbit appearing in Ireland and working at a souvenir shop that sold Irish flags and fiddles.
“Surprised it doesn’t have a token Irish character – Máiréad the Moose or something – who does Irish dancing and loves potatoes,” wrote one commenter.
“Yeah we got it too, Ireland is basically a diddly-eye theme park. But the peppa pig corporation isn’t even trying, the quality of all that stuff is woeful,” wrote another.
“I never do this with books but I put it in the bin IMMEDIATELY after reading it. I would have put it in sooner but the kids spotted it. It is horrendous. Not allowed in this dojo!” shared a similar comment.
“This is exactly the book I’d have got for my girls ahead of taking them home to Limerick for paddy’s, thank you for saving me money. Wtf is wrong with these people?!” wrote another.
In terms of children’s series, Peppa Pig has amassed a very faithful and dedicated global audience.
In November of last year, even embattled UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson hailed the Peppa Pig franchise as a “genius” concept after his family visited Peppa Pig World, a theme park based on the cartoon favourite.
“Who would have believed that a pig that looks like a hairdryer or possibly a Picasso-like hairdryer, a pig that was rejected by the BBC, would now be exported to 180 countries with theme parks both in America and China, as well as in the New Forest?” he said.
“A business that’s worth at least six billion pounds ($A11bn) to this country – I think that is pure genius, don’t you?
“No Whitehall civil servant would have conceivably come up with Peppa.”
