Dave Grohl’s chart-topping band Foo Fighters will arrive in Victoria next week for a one-night only performance at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Friday, March 4.
Supported by Melbourne band Amyl and the Sniffers and veteran punk rockers The Meanies, Foo Fighters will play Australia’s first full-capacity stadium show by any international band since the COVID pandemic struck in March 2020.
Tickets for the show, which will be Foo Fighters’ first in Australia since 2018, go on sale on Friday, February 25, at midday. The group will arrive in Victoria hot on the heels of this week’s cinematic release of Studio 666, a horror comedy film featuring Grohl and his fellow band members.
The concert is a partnership with the Victorian government’s Always Live music program, teaming local stars and emerging talent with some of the world’s biggest acts.
Always Live aims to feature performances of all scales and styles and was conceived by former Mushroom Group chairman Michael Gudinski, who died a year ago.
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Martin Pakula, said 25,000 tickets would be available for the show, which he described as “a brilliant way to launch this program” across Victoria.
“Foo Fighters, in terms of the quality of that act, should give you a really good sense of what we’re trying to achieve here,” Mr Pakula said. “We’ve got a thriving local music scene that’s been battered over the last couple of years, but we’ve seen signs of its powerful re-emergence.
“I’m very excited by the fact the Foo Fighters have chosen Geelong for their one and only show of this tour. It’s going to be great for the tourism of that region, for the events scene of that region.
“This is wonderful for our local music scene, great to have big acts back in town. We hope this is just the start of what will be a wonderful year for live music, and it’s absolutely fabulous to see the great Michael Gudinski’s vision started to be brought into effect.”
Foo Fighters’ 10th album Medicine at Midnight debuted on top of the Australian charts last year and was their eighth number one album in Australia.
The band has sold more than 30 million albums since 1995’s debut, self-titled release and has won 12 Grammy awards, including best rock album four times.
Grohl played drums in Nirvana and formed Foo Fighters with bass player Nate Mendel and guitarist Pat Smear after releasing the debut Foo Fighters album, which he wrote and recorded himself.
Drummer Taylor Hawkins joined soon after the release of second album The Colour and the Shape. Chris Shiflett joined the band in 1999 and Rami Jaffee has been a touring member since 2005.
Tickets to Foo Fighters’ all-ages show on March 4 go on sale at midday (AEDT) on Friday, February 25. For tickets and more details, go to frontiertouring.com/foofighters and Ticketmaster.com.au or call 136 100.
