The Mandalorian season finale introduces new spinoff series, The Book of Boba Fett to come in December 2021 - ABC News

Boba Fett is joining the Star Wars characters who are stepping out from the background and getting their own show.

Caution: SPOLIERS AHEAD.

Jon Favreau, creator of Disney's hit TV series The Mandalorian, said that The Book of Boba Fett will be a standalone spinoff series starring the clone bounty hunter previously best known for helping to capture Han Solo in the sci-fi saga.

Favreau told Good Morning America that the series, which was teased last week in the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, will debut on the Disney+ streaming service in December 2021.

"This is actually separate from The Mandalorian season 3," Favreau said.

The Mandalorian which has proved a huge hit for Disney+, stars Pedro Pascal as a bounty hunter sent on a sensitive mission and features fan favourite Baby Yoda.

It is the first live-action TV series set in the galaxy far, far away that was first seen on screen in the 1977 movie Star Wars.

Favreau said The Book of Boba Fett was an addition to the slew of some 10 new Star Wars related TV shows and movies announced by Disney earlier this month.

As well as another season for The Mandalorian, the new shows are:

  • Rangers of the New Republic
  • Ahsoka
  • Rogue One spin-off series called Andor
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi series
  • Lando series
  • The Acolyte
  • The Bad Batch
  • Star Wars: Visions
  • A Droid Story

Favreau said the Boba Fett series was held back from that announcement because "we didn't want to spoil the surprise".

"The Book of Boba Fett will be set in the same timeline as The Mandalorian — shortly after the events depicted in the 1983 movie The Return of the Jedi," he said.

Favreau said it was difficult to also keep that surprise under wraps too.

"It was very tricky because it's very hard to keep a secret nowadays, especially with Star Wars, because people are so curious about it," he said.

"And there are so many people involved with the process, with the visual effects … making it, filming it, at the studios, everything.

Favreau revealed Hamill was filmed on set using "whatever technology we had available to de-age make him look as much like he did in the old films."

But then, more drama comes in the post-credit scene of the finale.

We see Fennec Shand and Boba Fett charging into Jabba the Hutt's palace with guns blazing.

Boba kills Bib Fortuna and takes Jabba's throne, and perhaps his operations now too, with Fennec at his side.
