Australian-American actress Betty Bobbitt has passed away “peacefully” at the age of 81, after she had a “major stroke”, as her family reveals.

Bobbitt, who was best known for her roles as Judy Bryant in Prisoner, which was known in Britain and America as Prisoner: Cell Block H, spent almost a week in palliative care in hospital before she passed away on Monday.

Christopher Hill, her son, shared the sad news on his Facebook account, writing, “Sadly, mum passed away this morning at 10:20am after five nights in hospital.

“She was peaceful and in no pain. Thank you for your support and apologies if I can’t respond to everyone but I will try. I will post more later.”

Mr Hill also revealed that his mother had suffered from a stroke.

“We are hugely devastated and struggling to come to terms with such a sudden event,” he wrote on social media at the time.

“My mum has been a legend, an inspiration, a mentor and icon for so many.

“She is comfortable and not in any pain that we can tell, but the prognosis is not good. She is not expected to recover.”

Bobbitt played Judy Bryant on the hit TV show from 1980 to 1985, which made her one of the show’s longest running characters.

She was initially only offered a 13-week role, however ended up staying on for 430 episodes.

Betty also famously starred alongside Paul Hogan in three of the Crocodile Dundee movies, also appearing in shows like A Country Practice, All Saints and Blue Heelers.

The actress guest-starred in Neighbours as recently as last year, where she reunited with former Prisoner co-star Colette Mann.

Born in Manhattan, New York in 1939, Bobbitt moved to Los Angeles when she was 18-years-old to pursue her acting career.

In 1962, she took off to Australia for what was only meant to be a six-month stay.

She never left.

Bobbitt was married her husband, Australian artist Robin Hill.
