Christo, Bulgarian-born artist best known for temporary installations, dies in New York - ABC Technology and Games

Christo, the Bulgarian-born artist best known for his temporary installations based on wrapping the exteriors of landmark buildings, bridges and outdoor spaces, died at age 84 of natural causes at his home in New York City.

Famous for his large projects created with his wife Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, Christo used some of the world's most iconic landmarks as his canvas.

One of his most famous was the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin in 1995 in a vast silvery curtain.

The German parliament was wrapped for two weeks by recycled material, in a work that was first planned in 1971, according to Christo's website.

Christo escaped from former-communist Bulgaria in 1957, first to Prague and then to Vienna and Geneva.

In 1960, he moved into a garage owned by an artist friend of his, hidden away in an industrial site.

The garage, which now became his studio, was next to a recycling dump, which housed used oil drums.

This is where he was able to create the pieces of art he wanted, according to an Instagram post published in April.

"The studio made it possible for Christo to create large-scale works for the first time," the post read.

However, this would not be the last time Christo would seek inspiration from oil drums and barrels.

The London Mastaba, was a major project which was on display in the heart of London during the Summer of 2018.

Presented in June of that year, The London Mastaba was temporarily displayed in London's Hyde Park, floating on Serpentine Lake.

The piece was a 20-metre-high sculpture of an ancient Egyptian tomb, made from 7,506 red, white and mauve barrels put on a platform in a lake in the park.

The Floating Piers, was another temporary work which allowed visitors to northern Italy's, Lake Iseo, to walk on water.

The floating fabric was 3 kilometres long, and was free for tourists to walk on.

Christo was preparing his latest art piece in Paris.

His latest project envisioned wrapping the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in 25,000 square metres of recyclable polypropylene fabric in silvery blue and 7,000 metres of red rope.

"Christo and Jeanne-Claude have always made clear that their artworks in progress be continued after their deaths. Per Christo's wishes, L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped in Paris, France, is still on track for September 18 to October 3, 2021," a statement from his office said.

Christo's Instagram page showed a number of preliminary plans for the project.

Following his death, Christo's office released a statement about the importance art had to not only him, but his wife who died in 2009.

"Christo and Jeanne-Claude's artwork brought people together in shared experiences across the globe, and their work lives on in our hearts and memories.

"In a 1958 letter Christo wrote, 'Beauty, science and art will always triumph.' We hold those words closely today."

Dead to Me’s Linda Cardellini, Christina Applegate almost starred in Legally Blonde - NEWS.com.au

Fans hooked on Netflix’s cult black comedy Dead To Me have been using two words to describe lead characters Jen and Judy: Friendship goals.

But that seems a little twisted, given theirs is a friendship forged from a web of lies, crime and cover-ups. Are they really friends – or are they keeping an eye on each other, each making sure the other doesn’t snitch?

Actress Linda Cardellini, who plays the mysterious but good-hearted Judy to Christina Applegate’s caustic single mum Jen in the series, acknowledges the characters are unlikely BFFs.

“The first season, I thought, if I can just make people want them to be friends – after everything you come to find out about Judy – I will have done something that seems impossible. And people who like the show really seem to love Jen and Judy as friends,” she told news.com.au over a Zoom call from her home in the US last week.

“They are very yin and yang – and they do at this point need each other, despite what they should or shouldn’t be doing together.”

Season two of the series launched on Netflix last month and ramped up the show’s trademark shock twists to Mexican soap opera levels: Surprise romances, identical twins and mysteriously disappearing corpses all play a part. Through the increasingly far-fetched plot twists, the friendship between Jen and Judy anchors the show back in reality. Surprisingly, given so much of the series hinges on their chemistry, Cardellini admits she and Applegate hadn’t even met before she signed on the dotted line.

“It happens a lot in the industry. I’ve had an enormous amount of luck in terms of loving the people I’m working with. You want to be able to work well together. From the second we met, there was no filter,” Cardellini said of their first meeting, a lunch with series creator Liz Feldman.

“It was just a really honest relationship where we could really talk to each other. On set, it was so much fun, because I’ve never been head to head with another female co-lead so much, being able to do all the gymnastics that we do – comedy, drama, singing, dancing! Sometimes we just continue to improv until they finally kick us off set.”

And as Applegate discussed with typical candour during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live last year, the pair are making up for lost time, in a way: Had she made a different career move almost 20 years ago, they could have starred in the 2001 smash hit comedy Legally Blonde together.

Applegate, just a few years off Married With Children, felt the lead role of Elle Woods was too close to the perky blonde she’d portrayed on the small screen for years. “Reese Witherspoon did a way better job than I ever could … and she now has way more money and way more success, so why would I even regret that?” she said on Watch What Happens Live, tongue firmly in cheek.

Cardellini had a small but memorable role in the film, playing directly opposite Witherspoon as ‘Chutney Windham,’ whose lies in court help Elle Woods crack a big case.

“In this town, it’s a very interesting fabric of people you come across, and people you never do. We’d both been in the industry for decades and never crossed paths. But you never know, one small decision … If she had’ve taken that role, who knows what else would’ve been cast? It’s a small world in some ways.”

Dead To Me season 1 and 2 are now available on Netflix.

Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift defend George Floyd riots - NEWS.com.au

Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and a host of other celebrities have joined the fight for social justice as America descends into chaos amid nationwide anti-racism protests.

Protests have now erupted in at least 30 US cities over the past six days following the death of unarmed black man George Floyd at the hands of police.

With no sign of the situation de-escalating anytime soon, a number of high-profile figures have thrown their support behind the cause.

After receiving plenty of backlash for remaining quiet on political issues during the contentious 2016 US election, Taylor Swift is now among those publicly criticising President Donald Trump and showing her voting hand.

Tweeting Mr. Trump directly, Swift condemned his actions and declared “we will vote you out in November”.

The post has amassed more than 2.1 million likes and easily become her most-liked ever.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga shared a lengthy statement via Twitter, explaining that she was “afraid to incite further anger” but that it is “the emotion that’s justified”.

"I do not wish to contribute to more violence, I wish to contribute to a solution. I am as outraged by the death of George Floyd as I have been by the deaths of exponentially too many black lives over hundreds of years that have been taken from us in this country as a result of systemic racism and the corrupt systems that support it.

"The voices of the black community have been silenced for too long and that silence has proven deadly time and time again. And no matter what they do to protest, they are still met with no compassion by the leaders that are meant to protect them.

"Every day people in America are racist, that's a fact. Right now is a critical time for the black community to be supported by all other communities so we can put a stop to something that is intrinsically wrong by the grace of God or whatever creator you do or do not believe in.

"We have known for a long time that President Trump has failed. He holds the most powerful office in the world, yet offers nothing but ignorance and prejudice while black lives continue to be taken.

"We have known he is a fool, and a racist, since he took office. He is fuelling a system that is already rooted in racism, and racist activity, and we can all see what is happening.

"It's time for a change. I urge people to speak gently to each other, speak with passion, inspiration, and impress the importance of this issue until the systems that keep us sick die, instead of people we love."

Singer Billie Eilish, 18, also joined the chorus, admitting her response was slow off the mark as she’d been trying to “figure out how to address (this situation) delicately” with her “enormous platform” before slamming the “All Lives Matter” movement.

“If I hear one more person say "aLL liVeS maTteR" one more f**king time I'm gonna lose my f**king mind," she wrote.

“Will you shut the f**k up? … This is not about you. Stop making everything about you. You are not in need. You are not in danger.

“ … If all lives matter, why are black people being killed for just being black? Why are immigrants persecuted? Why are white people given opportunities that people of other races aren’t? Do you know why? White. F**king. Privilege.”

Beyonce also used Instagram to share her emotional reaction, posting a video demanding “justice for George Floyd”.

“We need justice for George Floyd. We all witnessed his murder in broad daylight. We’re broken and we’re disgusted. We cannot normalise this pain,” Beyoncé said in the video posted Saturday.

“I’m not only speaking to people of colour; if you’re white, black, brown or anything in-between, I’m sure you feel hopeless by the racism going on in America right now. No more senseless killing of human beings, no more seeing people of colour as less than human. We can no longer look away. George is all of our family in humanity. He’s our family because he’s a fellow American.”

It comes as pop star Halsey revealed she was shot at twice by rubber bullets as she joined the frontline of the protests alongside other celebrities including Emily Ratajkowski and Paris Jackson in Los Angeles over the weekend.

Ratajkowski also took to Twitter to share footage from the frontline and criticise the coverage of the protest.

“The media coverage of the #LosAngelesProtest are (sic) complete bulls**t. The police are MILITARISED and civilians have no weapons. These are not violent protests but they become violent when an actual ARMY is deployed. RIOTS ARE THE LANGUAGE OF THE UNHEARD. Try listening!” she wrote.

Paris Jackson, daughter of the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, also took to Instagram to post a picture of herself among protesters and condemn the outbreaks of violence.

“Today started out so beautifully, seeing people come together with peace and harmony in their hearts. it broke my heart to see it all go up in flames,” the 22-year-old wrote.

“Violence is not the answer. How do we expect to bring our world up to a happier and higher and healthier way of living if we’re stooping as low as those that committed the crimes we’re protesting? Peaceful protest only!”

Grimes and Elon Musk reveal what they really call their baby - NEWS.com.au

Grimes and Elon Musk left fans perplexed earlier this month when they revealed they named their newborn son X Æ A-12.

The pair was inundated with questions regarding the pronunciation and meaning behind the unconventional moniker, which ended up being slightly changed after his birth.

In an interview with Bloomberg about her upcoming online art exhibition, the singer revealed she calls her newborn “Little X”.

Last Sunday, Grimes opened up on Instagram about the change the couple made to their child’s name, given that it reportedly wouldn’t be accepted legally in the state of California.

She told a fan the couple replaced the number 12 from his name with Roman numerals instead.

“X Æ A-Xii,” she responded, without providing further insight concerning the reason behind the switch.

One of her followers responded, “Nice! Just removed the numbers to conform to California law.” Grimes wrote, “Roman numerals. Looks better tbh.”

Family lawyer David Glass previously told People magazine that while the original name is technically legal, California only accepts the use of the 26 letters in the English alphabet for baby names.

Grimes, whose birth name is Claire Boucher, and the tech entrepreneur welcomed their son on May 4.

According to the outlet, the new mum previously took to Twitter and explained the X represents “the unknown variable” and “Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence)”.

She also shared that part of the name is a tribute to the CIA’s Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance plane, which has “no weapons, no defences, just speed. Great in battle, but nonviolent.” As for the “A,” it represents “Archangel,” which is her “favourite song” and the number “12” represented the Chinese zodiac sign of the rat.

But when Musk, 48, participated in a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he said X is spoken “like the letter” while “the ‘Æ’ is pronounced like ‘ash’.”

He also claimed it was Grimes who “mostly came up with the name”. However, Musk said the A-12 addition was his idea as a nod to the Lockheed A-12.

Musk reportedly has five sons from a previous marriage. His first son Nevada passed away at 10 weeks old in 2002 from SIDS.

Chrissy Teigen donates $200k to rioters amid George Floyd protests - NEWS.com.au

Chrissy Teigen has pledged $US200,000 to bail out “rioters and criminals” who have been arrested in protests springing up in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd.

“In celebration of whatever the f**k maga night is, I am committed to donating $100,000 to the bail outs of protesters across the country,” Teigen first tweeted Saturday.

The model, who is married to John Legend, then upped the ante when a commenter attempted to correct her tweet, branding the protesters “rioters and criminals.”

“Ooo they might need more money then. Make it $200,000,” Teigen responded.

Teigen’s pledge got the approval of some fans, including journalist Yashar Ali, who tweeted, “I’m so proud of you, baby.”

“God I love you,” wrote YouTuber Tyler Oakley.

Others did not support the move.

“Communities will be ruined and businesses won’t come back but you get to show off how much money you have. Those poors will just have to figure it out, but who actually cares about them right? You get to pretend to care and that’s more fun,” wrote one person.

“Looters are in Beverly Hills. You going to let them in your house? Let them take your TV’s?” asked another.

“Chrissy. Serious question. Why would you bail out a criminal who used the cover of peaceful protest to commit a crime?? It makes no sense,” wrote another.

Teigen’s original tweet was also a response to President Donald Trump — who had earlier in the day tweeted about hosting a MAGA night at the White House.

“The professionally managed so-called ‘protesters’ at the White House had little to do with the memory of George Floyd. They were just there to cause trouble. The @SecretService handled them easily. Tonight, I understand, is MAGA NIGHT AT THE WHITE HOUSE???” the president wrote.

Within just an hour, Teigen’s tweets amassed more than 15,000 retweets and 112,000 likes.

Kylie Jenner reportedly ‘furious’ at momager Kris Jenner over lying billionaire claims - NEWS.com.au

Kylie Jenner is furious with her mum Kris over claims she lied about the beauty mogul's $1 billion fortune.

Sources told The Sun the 22-year-old is refusing to take the momager's calls after Forbes dropped bombshell reports at the weekend she may have forged tax filings.

An insider said, “Kris – who reportedly gets 10 per cent of Kylie’s deals – is in panic mode.

“Kylie won’t answer the phone for Kris and is at a loss over who to trust.”

The source added: “Kris is petrified Kylie could sack her or cut her off so tensions are at an all-time high.”

The business magazine claimed the Kylie Cosmetics founder “inflated the size and success of her business for years” and determined she’s not a billionaire.

Forbes has recalculated Kylie’s net worth and concluded that she is not a billionaire,” reporters Chase Peterson-Withorn and Madeline Berg claimed.

They alleged: “Kylie’s business is significantly smaller, and less profitable, than the family has spent years leading the cosmetics industry and media outlets, including Forbes, to believe.”

Forbes then claimed the Kardashians went to “unusual” lengths to prove just how wealthy Kylie was, which included “inviting Forbes into their mansions and CPA’s offices, and even creating tax returns that were likely forged.”

The magazine had previously labelled the star of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, which is streaming its new season on Binge, the youngest self-made billionaire in 2019, and she was able to maintain that status in 2020, even after selling 51 per cent of her Kylie Cosmetics company to beauty giant Coty in a deal valued at $1.2 billion.

Soon after the most recent article came out, Kylie took to Twitter to deny Forbes’ claims.

She wrote: “What am I even waking up to. I thought this was a reputable site. All I see are the a number of inaccurate statements and unproven assumptions lol.

“I've never asked for any title or tried to lie my way there EVER. period.”

She also shut down claims she forged her tax returns.

Kylie could potentially face “serious jail time” if she were “dumb enough” to submit false tax filings to the IRS, a lawyer told The Sun.

Beverly Hills criminal defence lawyer Adam Michael Sacks said it would be a “very serious offence” if she’d forged documents.

The lawyer added that while it is “highly unlikely” the reality star was dishonest with the government, she could “face serious jail time” if she did lie.

“It’s very hard to believe someone at her level would risk major tax fraud. It’s all about vanity for her as it is for a lot of people who reach for the title of ‘billionaire’.”

Josh Lucas’ ex-wife accuses him of cheating during quarantine - NEWS.com.au

Josh Lucas’ ex-wife, Jessica Ciencin Henriquez, has accused the actor of “cheating” in quarantine when they’d supposedly reconciled.

Writer Henriquez branded the Ford V Ferrari star — with whom she shares 7-year-old son Noah — a “really s**t human” in a furious tweet, reports The Sun.

Lucas, 48, and Henriquez got married in March 2012 and have been on and off since she filed for divorce in January 2014.

A source close to Lucas denied the two had gotten back together at all.

Jessica wrote, “Exes are exes for a reason.

“Having a child with someone makes you want to forgive them more than you normally would, it makes you believe they are better than they are.”

Jessica went on: “But it takes a really s**t human to cheat on their partner (correction: now ex partner) in the middle of a pandemic. Thank you for reminding me why I left you in the first place. I deserve better than this. Our son deserves better than this.

“And yes, I am airing this publicly because there are a lot of women accepting much less than they deserve because there are kids in the picture.” She signed off, “You’re not stupid for hoping, for believing that people can change. I see you.”

A source close to Sweet Home Alabama star Lucas claimed the exes hadn’t rekindled their romance during quarantine. They told People: “They haven’t been together in a long time. They are co-parents and have been doing so since their split in 2014. “They’re in California now but live separately. They weren’t trying to reconcile.”

The Sun Online has contacted Lucas’ reps or comment.

Lucas and Henriquez have been “bird nest” co-parenting Noah since splitting when he was 1. This means rotating in and out of the same home while Noah stayed put.

They were rumoured to have reconciled several times since their official split and have attended events together with Noah in the past.

Last year, they moved to Bali with Noah so their son could attend a special environmentally-conscious school.

Henriquez previously revealed that co-parenting “sucks” and that Lucas is the person who “brings her the most pain”. She said in an essay for Time magazine in 2018: “I’ll say the thing that no one else wants to say: Co-parenting sucks.

“Successfully sharing the person who brings you the most joy with the person who brings you the most pain is nothing short of a miracle.”

She added: “We tried really hard to be the world’s friendliest exes and in photos it was believable, but in reality we were actually two people desperately clinging onto the fantasy of what we thought our family could look like.”

She added that taking the step of divorcing made things final for them. She wrote: “No matter how much my ex-husband and I love each other, how much we’ve forgiven one another and how much we’re willing to work together, divorce means we set fire to the fantasy … and what’s left in the ashes is harder to accept than I imagined.”

Ben Fordham begins new role as 2GB breakfast host, taking over from Alan Jones - 9News

"Well, well, well good morning, thank you very much for tuning in."

And with those words, Ben Fordham has begun his new role as host of 2GB's breakfast show this morning, taking over from veteran broadcaster Alan Jones.

"I'm not going to go screaming like I usually do in the afternoon because it's early morning and some people are just waking up," Fordham said.

"Good morning, get up, get out of bed we are underway, the brand-new breakfast show on 2GB.

"We'll speak a bit later on about Alan Jones and about the legacy he leaves behind."

But Fordham did give his new audience a bit of a warning, all in jest of course.

"This is a brand-new breakfast show so you're going to have to bear with me, I will be making a few errors along the way, but I promise you we have a big one coming your way," he said.

Fordham, 43, has pulled out all the stops for his first day, securing in-studio interviews with "Sydney's three biggest decision makers".

Mr Morrison called the protests "terribly disturbing", saying he didn't want to see similar scenes in Australia.

The protest movement is due to hit New South Wales on Wednesday evening with a peaceful rally planned in Sydney. Nearly 4000 people have expressed their interest.

"They were terribly disturbing," Mr Morrison said on 2GB this morning.

"As upsetting and terrible as the murder was, it is shocking, it also made me cringe.

"And I just think to myself how wonderful a country is Australia.

"We have our problems, we have our faults, we have our issues there's no doubt about that.

"But when I see things like that, I am just very thankful for the wonderful country we live in."

When asked about the planned protest in Sydney, the prime minster was hopeful of a very different turnout than what's played out across the US.

"There's no need to import things happening in other countries here to Australia," Mr Morrison said.

"Australia is a fair country. Australia is not the United States. The United States is a great country and they're a great friend of Australia and they're going through a difficult time.

"We wish them all the best as they deal with that – it's clearly a very tough period for them."

Fordham also spoke with NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian and later this morning, NRL boss Peter V'Landys will join him in the studio.

The popular Sydney radio personality has moved to breakfast from the afternoon Drive shift, taking over from Jones, 79.

It's been almost 30 years since Fordham first met Jones as a 15-year-old work experience kid on the Alan Jones Breakfast Show on radio station 2UE.

Broadcasting from his Fitzroy Falls home in the NSW Southern Highlands, Jones dedicated his final program on Friday to his "loyal, supportive and sometimes critical" listeners and thanked the producers and technicians.

2GB is part of Nine, which also publishes this site.

Lady Gaga calls President Trump a 'fool' and 'racist' and she is 'outraged' by death of George Floyd - Daily Mail

Lady Gaga labels President Trump a 'fool' and a 'racist' and says she is 'outraged' by the death of George Floyd in lengthy Instagram post

  • Lady Gaga took to Instagram on Saturday to label President Trump a 'fool' and a 'racist'
  • She wrote that Trump 'has failed' and 'offers nothing but ignorance and prejudice while black lives continue to be taken'
  • The 34-year-old singer is 'outraged' by the death of George Floyd who lost his life earlier this week at the hands of police in Minneapolis
  •  She noted that it is 'time for a change' and took an oath to stand in solidarity with the African-American community as a 'white, privileged woman'
  • She also called out her 'privileged' colleagues for not doing 'enough to fight racism'
  • Floyd's horrific death has sparked days of sometimes violent demonstrations across the nation
  • The police officer accused of killing Floyd, Derek Chauvin, was charged with third-degree murder on Friday

Lady Gaga took to Instagram on Saturday evening to label President Trump a 'fool' and a 'racist' and says she is 'outraged' by the death of George Floyd.

'We have known for a long time that President Trump has failed. He holds the most powerful office in the world, yet offers nothing but ignorance and prejudice while black lives continue to be taken,' wrote the 34-year-old pop star.

'[Trump] is fueling a system that is already rooted in racism, and racist activity, and we can all see what is happening. It's time for change.'

Gaga began her lengthy Instagram statement by noting that she had 'a lot of things to stay' about the George Floyd tragedy, but that she did not want to 'incite further anger.'

'The first thing I want to say is I'm afraid to say anything that will incite further anger, although that is precisely the emotion that's justified. I do not wish to contribute to more violence, I wish to contribute to a solution.'

She claimed she be as 'outraged by the death of George Floyd as [she had] been by the deaths of exponentially too many black lives over hundreds of years that have been from us in this country as a result of systemic racism and the corrupt systems that support it.'

'The voices of the black community have been silenced for too long and that silence has proven deadly time and time again. And no matter what they do to protest, that are still met with no compassion by the leaders that are meant to protect them,' wrote the Born This Way singer.

She stated that 'everyday people in America are racist, that's a fact,' before emphasizing that 'right now is a critical time for the black community to be supported by all other communities.'

Gaga believes that if communities can come together, then 'we can put a stop to something that is intrinsically wrong by the grace of God or whatever creator you do or do not believe in.'

'I urge people to speak gently to each other, speak with passion, inspiration, and impress the importance of this issue until the systems that keep us sick die, instead of people we love. We MUST show our love for the black community.'

Gaga acknowledged her personal privilege and vowed to continue to 'show [her] love to the black community.'

'As a white, privileged woman, i take an oath to stand by that. We haven't, as a privileged community, done enough to fight racism and stand up for those people who are being killed by it,' she wrote.

'This isn't justice. This is an epic tragedy that defines out country and has for a long time. I am sad. I am angry. And I will use the words that I can find to try to communicate what needs to change in as an effective and non-violent way as possible for me,' concluded the Grammy Award-winning artist.

In her post's caption, Gaga wrote 'Thank You' and emphasized that '#BlackLivesMatter Today. Yesterday. Tomorrow. FOREVER.'

In the horrifying video footage of Floyd's death, he is seen saying that he can not breathe as officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck.

Eventually he went silent and limp, and he was later declared dead.

Protests swelled after federal authorities said Thursday that they were making the case a top priority but announced no arrests at that time.

The Minneapolis policeman accused of killing Floyd, Chauvin, was taken into custody Friday and charged with third-degree murder, officials said.
