US singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, best known for his hit songs Margaritaville and Come Monday, died following a four-year battle with a rare and aggressive skin cancer.
Buffett died on Friday, aged 76, following a lengthy fight with Merkel cell cancer, according to a statement on his official website.
He had been fighting the cancer for four years while continuing to perform, as recently as early July when he made a surprise appearance in Rhode Island, the statement said.
He died in his Sag Harbour, New York home "surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs", the statement said.
Earlier news of his death had not revealed a cause.
Also known as Merkel cell carcinoma, the cancer is a very rare and tends to spread quickly, according to the US National Cancer Institute and the Mayo Clinic.
Risk factors include a lot of sun exposure, a weakened immune system, a history of other cancers, and being light-skinned and over 50.
Buffett's most popular tune Margaritaville— from the album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes — spent 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaked at Number 8.
The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016 for its cultural and historic significance, became a karaoke standard and helped brand Key West, Florida, as a destination known the world over.
Buffett was due to release a new album this year.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, two daughters and son.
