Wilco are one of the greats.
They've long since fortified themselves as one of America's best musical outfits, driven both by a love of traditional songcraft and sonic curiosity for more than 30 years.
They're also a sensational live band, as anyone who caught their last Australian visit in 2013 can attest. Since then however, we've watched on in envy as Wilco have released a string of albums and played countless tours without winging their way back to our shores.
No more! The band will finally make their way back next March for a tour of the East Coast's theatres, concert halls, and the Sydney Opera House.
"How is it possible that it's been over 10 years since Wilco was last down under!?' says frontman Jeff Tweedy.
"Mind-blowing. So we're beyond thrilled to be able to say we're coming back. We love Australia and can't wait!"
The Chicago-based band have released four albums since their last Australian tour (Star Wars, Schmilco, Ode To Joy and Cruel Country for those playing along at home) and they're putting out another later this month.
Titled Cousin (which may or may not be a reference to Chicago-based TV drama The Bear and its Wilco-friendly soundtrack), the record was produced by Welsh musician Cate Le Bon. It marks Wilco's first with an outside producer since 2004's A Ghost Is Born and promises a sea-change for the group.
If lead single 'Evicted' is anything to go by, we can expect another subtle evolution to Wilco's ongoing shape-shifting, which has seen them touch on alt-country, folk, experimental jamming, eclectic indie rock and more throughout a catalogue any modern ensemble would be envious of.
That all makes for a terrific concert experience. Whether it's the searing fretwork of lead guitarist Nels Cline, the bedrock rhythms of Glenn Kotche and John Stirratt, the multi-instrumental ornamentations of Mikael Jorgensen and Patrick Sansone, or simply the working man's banter of Tweedy – they're a real band's band.
Honestly, if you haven't seen tour doco Ashes of American Flags or applauded at home to live album Kicking Television, are you really a Wilco fan?
Joining Wilco at all shows (except the Sydney Opera House) will be WA-bred singer-songwriter Leah Senior.
Her specific strain of '70s shaded Australiana folk and baroque pop has the power to stun live on stage, and you've got plenty of time to acquainted with her fourth and latest album, The Music That I Make, before she warms up audiences in March.
