MAFS 2023 Episode 1 recap: Sparks are flying but one marriage is almost over before it's even begun as a scandal rocks the first wedding - Nine Shows

Welcome to Season 10 of Married At First Sight!

Yep that's right, 10, we've been doing this for almost a decade and somehow it just gets better and better. Every. Single. Time.

Stream every episode of Married At First Sight for free on 9Now.

Buckle up as 20 brides and grooms embark on what will no doubt be an emotional rollercoaster. Will wine glasses be smashed? Will we get a Martha and Michael worthy happy ending? Only time will tell, but for now, all we know is there's going to be a big scandal at one of the first weddings.

The hens' and bucks' night

There's a long roll call so we'll just introduce you to the stand out talent.

Lyndall is the first bride to rock up to the hens' night and being here means more to her than most.

"I was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, I think, when I was three-weeks-old," Lyndall reveals.

For most of her life, Lyndall thought she'd only live until her 30s but following the approval of a new drug, an extra forty years has been added to her life.

Moments after, we meet Bronte, but her arrival is quickly overshadowed by self-confessed "freak in the sheets" Melissawhose worst nightmare is a man that is "vanilla" in the bedroom. We can only hope Melissa's future groom is up to the challenge.

Melissa greets just about every bride by telling them openly: "I wanna bang my husband on the first night."

And while most of them think that's more power to Melissa, things go down like a lead-balloon when "super successful" CEO Melinda says she wants to wait it out with her husband.

READ MORE: What we learned about the MAFS brides and grooms from the Hens' and Bucks' night

'Freaky' Melissa is absolutely shocked by the idea that a woman like Melinda won't sleep with her husband on the first night and Melinda is, understandably, offended.

"I was just waiting for the conversation to be over," Melinda later tells cameras and honestly, same.

Over at the bucks' night we meet heavy metal rocker Jesse who says that people think he's "cocky and arrogant" but he doesn't really get why.

He then proceeds to bag out a third of Australian women by deeming "pumped up lips" and "long eyelashes" as turn offs. Jesse also has a zero-tolerance policy for wine snobs but as someone who loves a yellow ticketed savvy b, I decide that's a fair call.

Next up is Duncan and he's the kind of guy we'd all swipe right for. Even Jesse – with his endless list of deal breakers – can't fault Duncan.

"How's his jaw, my god," Jesse gawks. "You could crack a beer open on his jaw, it's that chiselled."

The grooms arrive in droves and soon start swapping heartwarming stories about their hopes for a happy marriage, but the D&Ms are quickly broken up by the arrival of Harrison.

From his montage – which mostly includes slow-motion footage of him lifting up timber slats and close ups of his biceps – we gather that he's is a builder.

The chippy promises that "if you find a better guy, he'll beat him by 10 per cent". I'm giving Harrison the award for smooth talker of the season already.

The experts enter to hype up the brides and grooms for married life. And with that – you guessed it – it's time for our first two weddings.

Lyndall and Cameron's Wedding

Lyndall and Cameron are both adventurous souls ready to start a new chapter in their lives and the experts think it's one the pair should start together.

For accountant Lyndall, 27, her new chapter begins as she throws herself into a relationship without fear for the first time in her life after a miracle drug has given her a new lease on life.

Cameron, also 27, is a carpenter who works in remote Northern Territory. He admits that he's never been in a relationship before and says that living "900 kilometres from civilisation" has made it hard to meet girls.

It's all butterflies and giggles as Lyndall and Cameron meet at the altar. That's tick number one for the experts.

Cameron decides that reading his vows in front of a room of people he's just met is the perfect time to tell Lyndall about his "21-week-old little boy called Bodie".

The wedding guests – Lyndall's parents included – hold their breath until Cameron reveals Bodie is in fact his cattle dog. Well played Cameron, well played.

"I'm stoked, completely stoked, looks lovely, very sweet. I'm so relieved, he's beautiful," Lyndall gushes.

Country boy Cameron is just as blown away by Lyndall and says, "It feels like I've already known her for years."

The pair discover they have plenty in common including a love for red Thai curry and country music.

Everything is going swimmingly, which is exactly why Lyndall "doesn't want to give Cameron any reason not to trust her".

So she decides to take him away from the wedding to tell him about her cystic fibrosis.

"I'm just nervous that he might not understand," Lyndall worries.

As soon as Lyndall says the words cystic fibrosis, Cameron's ears prick up.

Cameron's life has been personally touched by cystic fibrosis and he tells her the heartbreaking story of a friend who passed away after suffering with the chronic illness.

"It took a lot of courage for her [Lyndall] to sit down and tell me that and I respect every part of it," Cameron says.

"I'm stoked that she's got this second chance at life and I'm happy that I'm going to be there for her."

Just when we thought this moment couldn't get any more magical, the newlyweds share a kiss and I can already feel the chemistry through the TV.

Bronte and Harrison's Wedding

The experts try to convince us that Harrison's self-assuredness is just a "defence mechanism". Strip away all that bravado and the father-of-one is just a sensitive guy looking for a woman who shares the same "old-school" values as him.

Cue Bronte, 28, who is "all about that old school romance" and wants the same kind of love as her parents, who've been married for more than 30 years.

Harrison wants to put his best foot forward on his wedding day and prepares for it by putting on his James Bond inspired suit and spraying enough cologne to trigger an asthma attack.

During their wedding ceremony Bronte and Harrison exchange a lot of compliments and flirtatious glances. The attraction is definitely there for these two.

While Bronte is on cloud nine, her friend Jess already knows there's something not quite right about Harrison.

"As soon as I saw Harrison my heart just sank for Bronte," Jess tells cameras.

"Because I knew that I recognised him and that he was the person I was warned about.

"Harrison is pretending to be someone that he's really not. And I have proof."

Where does she recognise Harrison from? What was she warned about? Who is Harrison pretending to be? What proof!?

Jess lets Bronte enjoy her wedding reception for about five minutes before she drops an absolute bombshell on her.

Jess explains that she has a friend from Sydney who's been telling her she's seeing a guy who's going on MAFS

"The guy is saying to her how he's going to be with her when he finishes this experiment," Jess explains.

Oh, in case you haven't put two and two together yet, that guy is Harrison.

But Jess has photo evidence to back up her claims. There's photos of Harrison showing this girl how he's packing his bags to head off for the wedding day.

And to add insult to injury, apparently Harrison joked about how funny it would be if he got this girl pregnant before joining the show.

MAFS 2023, Bronte Schofield

Filled with rage, Bronte storms over and confronts Harrison about the rumours immediately.

And he soon clears up any doubts she has by telling her he was dating not one but "multiple women at a time" in the lead up to their wedding. No Harrison, this is not helping your case.

He makes matters worse by admitting he wishes he was marrying another girl he has a crush on instead of Bronte *facepalm*.

"It's my worst nightmare that something like this would come out and it did," Bronte tears up.

Married At First Sight continues Tuesday to Thursday at 7.30pm and Sunday at 7.00pm on Channel 9 and 9Now. Catch up on every episode of MAFS for free on 9Now.

Tom Verlaine, innovative guitarist and frontman of punk pioneers Television, dies at 73 - ABC News

Tom Verlaine, the inventive guitarist, singer and co-founder of seminal New York proto-punk band Television has died aged 73.

Verlaine died on Saturday in New York City, surrounded by close friends after a brief illness, the Lede Company public relations firm said.

Television influenced many bands while playing at downtown New York music venue CBGB alongside the Ramones, Patti Smith and Talking Heads in the 1970s.

Famous fans and fellow musicians paid tribute to Verlaine on social media, heaping praise on his innovative rock guitar playing.

"Tom Verlaine has passed over to the beyond that his guitar playing always hinted at," Mike Scott of The Waterboys tweeted.

"He was the best rock and roll guitarist of all time, and like Hendrix could dance from the spheres of the cosmos to garage rock. That takes a special greatness."

Though Television never found much commercial success, Verlaine's jaggedly inventive playing as part of the band's two-guitar assault influenced many musicians.

Television issued its groundbreaking debut album Marquee Moon in 1977 — including the nearly 11-minute title track and Elevation — as well as the follow-up Adventure a year later.

"Marquee Moon has become something of a holy grail of independent rock in the years since. It has been a clear influence on such artists as Pavement, Sonic Youth, the Strokes and Jeff Buckley," Billboard magazine wrote in 2003.

Increasing tension between Verlaine and fellow guitarist Richard Lloyd led Television to disband after its second album.

The group would reunite for a self-titled 1992 album for Capitol Records and sporadic live appearances.

"We wanted to strip everything down further, away from the showbiz theatricality of the glitter bands, and away from blues-iness and boogie," Television co-founder Richard Hell wrote in his autobiography, I Dreamed I Was a Very Clean Tramp.

"We wanted to be stark and hard and torn-up, the way the world was."

Verlaine released eight solo albums, his most commercially successful being his 1981 solo album Dreamtime, which peaked at number 177 on the US Billboard album chart.

He frequently served as accompanist to former partner Patti Smith.

Smith shared a tribute on Instagram, posting a photograph of the two of them together: "Farewell Tom, aloft the Omega."

Other tributes online included those from The Bangles' Susanna Hoffs as well as Billy Idol, who said Verlaine made music that influenced the US and UK punk scene.

Verlaine was born Tom Miller — later taking the last name of the 19th-century French poet Paul-Marie Verlaine after he met Hell, born Richard Meyers, at a Delaware prep school.

They were tall, skinny, sardonic kids who dropped out and made their way to the East Village, where they worked in bookstores and wrote poetry together.

"He was noted for his angular lyricism and pointed lyrical asides, a sly wit, and an ability to shake each string to its truest emotion," said a statement from his publicist.

"His vision and his imagination will be missed."

Verlaine's songwriting skills have also been hailed by contemporaries such as The Go-Betweens' Robert Forster, who described Television's Venus as a perfect song.

"He died peacefully in New York City, surrounded by close friends. His vision and his imagination will be missed," she wrote.

Born Thomas Miller in 1949, he was inspired to learn guitar after hearing the Rolling Stones' 1966 hit 19th Nervous Breakdown and co-founded punk group Television in 1973 alongside guitarist Richard Lloyd.

In his youth, Verlaine had a keen interest in poetry and took on his stage name as a tribute to French symbolist poet Paul Verlaine.

Best known as the lead singer and guitarist for the band, Verlaine once attributed his iconic sound to the fact that he never played along to records while learning.

"I never played guitar along with records, so I never learned all the speed licks everybody gravitates to when starting out," Verlaine told a Guitar Player interviewer in 2005

"I know 19-year-old guitarists who can play Danny Gatton solos note-for-note. They don't really know what notes they're playing, but they do them flawlessly."

He dated poet and fellow musician Patti Smith after meeting in the 1970s while living in New York, where both were active in the growing punk scene.

Television released two albums, Marquee Moon and Adventure, before splitting in 1978, at which point Verlaine pursued a solo music career. The band briefly reunited in 1990.

Verlaine was also part of the Million Dollar Bashers, a supergroup made up of Verlaine, Sonic Youth musicians Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, Bob Dylan bassist Tony Garnier, guitarist Smokey Hormel, and keyboardist John Medeski.

Australian Open: Pip Edwards and Ash Barty go head-to-head on the Melbourne Park tennis court - Daily Mail

Fitness guru Pip Edwards goes head-to-head against sporting legend Ash Barty as they take to the tennis court

Pip Edwards stepped onto the court with tennis great Ash Barty on Saturday at the Australian Open in Melbourne Park.

Playing after hours with friends, the fashion icon, 42, brushed elbows with tennis commentator Casey Dellacqua and television presenter Darren McMullen.

The fitness guru posted snaps of her day out with the sporty crew on Instagram, wearing an all black tennis ensemble from her own P.E Nation label.

After posing for a few pictures with her friends, Edwards shared candid shots of herself hitting a few balls.

She also picked up a few tips from the former Australian Open champ as Barty, 26, told her to 'always hit the ball long'.

'Out and long is better than hitting the net,' Edwards captioned one of her photos.

Edwards appeared to be in good spirits after she was dragged into the public stoush between her ex Michael Clarke and his girlfriend Jade Yarbrough which involved Karl Stefanovic and his wife Jasmine.

Extraordinary footage emerged last Wednesday of a heated exchange between Clarke and Yarbrough while they were on holiday in Noosa, Queensland.

In the video, which was filmed by an onlooker on January 10 and sold to The Daily Telegraph for a reported $10,000, Yarbrough accused the former Test captain of cheating on her with his former flame Edwards on December 17.

Others in the group, including Stefanovic, his wife Jasmine - Yarbrough's older sister - and celebrity accountant Anthony Bell, tried to defuse the fracas.

Yarbrough and Clarke, who was limping in the footage after hurting his hamstring, have since been slapped with 'public nuisance' fines.

Stefanovic is yet to make a statement on the matter, but was asked about the footage during an event at the Australian Open last Thursday.

According to the Herald Sun, he smiled when asked if he wanted to comment but refused to say anything.

'You know what the answer is going to be,' he replied.

A remorseful Clarke has since taken full responsibility for what happened.

State of emergency declared in Auckland after torrential rains, flash floods - The Age

By Praveen Menon, Lucy Craymer and Laura Chung
Updated

A state of emergency was declared in New Zealand’s biggest city Auckland on Friday as torrential rains caused widespread flooding and evacuations, closing the city’s airports and forcing organisers to cancel a scheduled concert by Elton John.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown declared a state of emergency due to the extent of the “damage, displacement and disruption” caused by the weather and the need for response agencies to draw on more powers.

“The region has experienced widespread damage from flooding and torrential rain, with reports of slips and inundation,” Brown said in a statement.

“Infrastructure and emergency services alike have been overwhelmed by the impacts of the storm.”

Brown confirmed a body had been found at Wairau Valley in Auckland’s north, but police are yet to confirm if the death was flood-related.

Auckland Emergency Management said in a post on Twitter that northern, north-western and western parts of the city were affected by significant flooding, with conditions expected to worsen.

The agency advised residents in flood-prone areas to prepare to evacuate and opened an evacuation centre in West Auckland.

Between 8pm and 10pm on Friday night, more than 131mm of rain fell in Auckland. MetService said a record amount of rain had fallen in the city in the past 24 hours. By 1am, the region had recorded 249mm of rain, exceeding the previous 24-hour record of 161.8mm set in February 1985.

Videos on social media showed firefighters, police and defence force staff rescuing stranded people from flooded homes using ropes and rescue boats. No details were immediately available on how many people had been evacuated so far.

Major roads were also blocked by the floods, causing long traffic queues on highways. Police said they were working with Fire and Emergency New Zealand to respond to calls and asked people to stay off the roads if possible.

Auckland’s domestic and international airports were closed due to widespread flooding. Images on social media showed the check-in area in the international terminal knee-deep in flood water.

Most of the 2000 people stranded at Auckland Airport overnight were able to head home, as floodwaters subsided, Stuff reported.

The country’s new prime minister Chris Hipkins said the government would provide as much support and help as possible. He said movement around Auckland was difficult and advised people to stay where they were if safe.

Three evacuation centres are up and running, with one assisting at least 40 people.

Hipkins planned to return to Auckland in the morning, but said he had been delayed because of the bad weather. He said he would monitor the situation from Wellington.

British musician Elton John’s concert in the city, which was expected to be attended by about 40,000 people, was cancelled.

“Given the weather, tonight’s show has been cancelled. Our operations team is working to redirect special event buses to help get people back home,” Auckland Transport said in a statement on Twitter.
