Taylor Swift has shocked fans again with a second surprise album dropping this year.
The singer announced Evermore in a post on social media, revealing that it's a follow-up to the hugely popular Folklore album, which dropped in July.
"I'm elated to tell you that my 9th studio album, and folklore's sister record, will be out tonight at midnight eastern," she announced, adding: "It's called evermore."
"To put it plainly, we just couldn't stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in," Swift told fans, hinting at her recent announcement that she's re-recording her back catalogue of hits after the masters were sold.
"I've never done this before. In the past I've always treated albums as one-off eras and moved onto planning the next one after an album was released. There was something different with Folklore.
"In making it, I felt less like I was departing and more like I was returning."
The hit-maker revealed she continued working with Aaron Dessner of The National, Jack Antonoff, lead singer of indie pop band Bleachers and Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver), who she collaborated with for Folklore.
The album, which drops at midnight US time, 4pm Friday AEDT, features another collaboration with Bon Iver on the title track.
Evermore also has been co-written with "WB" — a pseudonym for Swift's boyfriend Joe Alwyn, who is credited on Folklore as William Bowery.
The singer admitted to her actor beau's work on the album in her Disney+ special, Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions.
"There's been a lot of discussion about William Bowery and his identity because it's not a real person," the 30-year-old Grammy winner said after fans began to question if it was in fact her boyfriend of three years.
"So, William Bowery is Joe, as we know," she confirmed.
Releasing the album tracklist in a follow-up post, Swift reveals a collaboration with band Haim as well.
"Ever since I was 13, I've been excited about turning 31 because it's my lucky number backwards, which is why I wanted to surprise you with this now," she explained to fans, with the music dropping two days before her birthday on December 13.
"You've all been so caring, supportive and thoughtful on my birthdays and so this time I thought I would give you something!
"I also know this holiday season will be a lonely one for most of us and if there are any of you out there who turn to music to cope with missing loved ones the way I do, this is for you."
Swift will also launch the music video for her first single off the album, 'Willow', which she directed.
"Tonight the story continues, as the music video for 'willow' drops at midnight eastern. I'm forever grateful to the following creatives who have helped and guided me to be able to direct my own videos."
