Jock Zonfrillo, MasterChef Australia judge and chef, dies aged 46 - The Guardian

Jock Zonfrillo, judge on MasterChef Australia, chef and author, has died at the age of 46.

His family confirmed his death on Monday, saying “our irreplaceable husband, father, brother, son and friend” died on Sunday in Melbourne.

No cause of death was given. A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed that the death was not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

MasterChef Australia’s new season was due to premiere on Monday night, but Network 10 confirmed that it will not air this week.

“With completely shattered hearts and without knowing how we can possibly move through life without him, we are devastated to share that Jock passed away yesterday,” Zonfrillo’s family said in a statement.

“So many words can describe him, so many stories can be told, but at this time we’re too overwhelmed to put them into words. For those who crossed his path, became his mate, or were lucky enough to be his family, keep this proud Scot in your hearts when you have your next whisky.”

Just hours before Zonfrillo’s death was announced, British chef Jamie Oliver shared a photo of them together on the set of MasterChef Australia, saying he was “so excited” about the new season.

Several former MasterChef contestants including Laura Sharrad, Sarah Tiong, Depinder Chhibber, Minoli De Silva and Reynold Poernomo paid tribute to the chef on social media, with Poernomo saying he was “shocked” by the news.

“... rest in peace chef, my heart and condolences to loved ones,” he wrote on Zonfrillo’s Instagram.

Chefs Colin Fassnidge, Rosheen Kaul and Dan Hong also shared their sadness.

“This is devastating,” wrote Hong, while former food critic Pat Nourse described Zonfrillo’s death as “incredibly sad news”.

“We’re the poorer for his passing. Truly heartbreaking,” he wrote on Instagram.

MasterChef Australia 2020 judges Andy Allen Melissa Leong and Zonfrillo.

Network 10 and MasterChef Australia production company Endemol Shine Australia said in a statement that they were “deeply shocked and saddened at the sudden loss”.

Peter Newman, chief executive officer at Endemol Shine Australia, said: “On set he was loved by the team and his passion for food and the show was infectious. He was also a brilliant champion for the contestants on MasterChef, always wanting the very best for them. He will be deeply missed by the entire MasterChef team. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

Born Barry Zonfrillo in Glasgow in 1976, Zonfrillo began working in kitchens as a dishwasher at the age of 13. He left school at 15 and started an apprenticeship at the Turnberry hotel, becoming one of its youngest-ever apprentices.

Zonfrillo began working for celebrated British chef Marco Pierre White at 17, writing in his 2021 memoir Last Shot that he was homeless and addicted to heroin at the time. He was appointed head chef at Cornwall’s Tresanton hotel when he was just 22.

Zonfrillo became head chef at Sydney’s Forty One in 2000, but was fired in 2002 after he set fire to an apprentice’s pants for working too slowly. Zonfrillo said it was a practical joke gone wrong. The 18-year-old apprentice, Martin Krammer, sued Zonfrillo and won $75,000 in damages in 2007. The same year, Zonfrillo declared bankruptcy.

He then opened several restaurants in Adelaide, including Restaurant Orana, Street ADL, Bistro Blackwood and Nonna Mallozzi. Restaurant Orana was named Australia’s restaurant of the year by Gourmet Traveller magazine in 2018, and the following year in the Good Food Guide. It was awarded three hats in 2019 and 2020, but closed in March 2020.

In 2019, he became a judge on MasterChef Australia – alongside Melissa Leong and Andy Allen – replacing the show’s original hosts Matt Preston, George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan.

Some of the stories in his memoir Last Shot were controversially disputed, with White saying that “almost everything he has written about me is untrue” in the chapters about Zonfrillo’s time in London in the 1990s. Zonfrillo’s claim that he had visited “hundreds of Indigenous communities” was also questioned.

But Zonfrillo denied embellishing his life story, saying: “This is the story of my life. I’ve lived every minute of it, the highs and lows, and I stand by it.”

“There’s no question that some of my book makes me look pretty unsavoury at the best of times. I carry the shame from those years, not pride, and it was a big obstacle for me to overcome when writing this book.”

Zonfrillo is survived by his third wife, Lauren Fried, and his four children.

Archbishop of Canterbury invites public to pledge allegiance to King Charles III during coronation - ABC News

Members of the public have been asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury to pledge their allegiance to the new monarch  out loud during King Charles III's coronation, in a new addition to the ancient ceremony.

The pledge is one of multiple changes to the ceremony that were revealed on Saturday, London time.

On May 6, during the coronation, the Archbishop of Canterbury will lead the pledge, which is called the Homage of The People, calling on the people of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland and other Realms and Territories:

"I call upon all persons of goodwill in The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of the other Realms and the Territories, to make their homage, in heart and voice, to their undoubted King, defender of all."

The public is then asked to state the following:

"I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law.
So help me God."

The bishop then says "God save The King", to which all are asked to reply "God save King Charles, long live King Charles, may The King live for ever."

That pledge replaces the homage of peers, a key element of the coronation ceremony for centuries, which expected dukes to pay homage and pledge allegiance to the monarch.

However, this requirement has been removed and replaced with the Homage of the People, which invites everyone to participate from their own home.

The Church of England notes that the change is "a new and significant moment in the tradition of the coronation".

"Never before in our history have the general public been offered such an opportunity to join with national figures in declaring their allegiance to a new sovereign," it says.

Other changes to the ceremony

A list of changes to the ancient coronation ceremony have been introduced, hoping to "represent and celebrate the diversity of our nation today".

For the first time, the service will include other languages associated with the United Kingdom.

There will be a prayer in Welsh and a hymn sung in Welsh, Scottisch Gaelic and Irish Gaelic.

Another change includes having female bishops participate in the coronation for the first time.

Buckingham Palace has also tried to involve different faiths in the ceremony by asking Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Sikh peers to present some of the Regalia that have no Christian meaning nor symbolism.

At the close of the service, before King Charles III proceeds to the gold state coach, he will receive and acknowledge a spoken greeting delivered in unison by representatives from Jewish, Hundi, Sikh, Muslim and Buddhist communities.

"I am delighted that the service will recognise and celebrate tradition, speaking to the great history of our nation, our customs, and those who came before us," the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said.

"At the same time, the service contains new elements that reflect the diversity of our contemporary society.

"It is my prayer that all who share in this service, whether they are of faith or no faith, will find ancient wisdom and new hope that brings inspiration and joy."

Booby Tape founder Bridgett Roccisano marries fiancé Joshua Cavallaro in lavish wedding - Daily Mail

Booby Tape founder Bridgett Roccisano marries fiancé Joshua Cavallaro in lavish wedding in East Melbourne

Booby Tape millionaire Bridgett Roccisano has married her fiancé, Joshua Cavallaro, in a fairytale wedding at St Patrick's Cathedral in East Melbourne on Saturday.

Joshua, 31 popped the question to Bridgett, 31, in London with a jaw-dropping six-carat diamond ring back in November 2021, and the glamorous couple finally sealed the deal in style.

Mildura-born, Melbourne-based Bridgett dazzled in a bespoke gown by designer Con Ilio that featured an off-shoulder design, long sleeves and dramatic ruching.

Joshua meanwhile looked dapper in a black suit, white shirt and black bow-tie.

Her bridesmaids, Chantel Giannarelli, Adele Sarrou, and sister Bianca, also donned white Con Ilio gowns for the big day.

The swanky black-tie reception took place at the National Gallery of Victoria, where singer Ricki-Lee Coulter wowed guests with a surprise late-night performance.

The event was styled with luxurious table decorations, glassware, and crockery.

The Great Hall was transformed into a floral wonderland.

The Roccisano sisters, renowned social media influencers in Melbourne, turned their boob-boosting brainchild into a lucrative business after creating Booby Tape in 2018.

Dubbed 'a breast lift in a box,' their revolutionary product has become a global sensation, taking the world by storm.

Bridgett got engaged to Joshua, a senior draftsman for the civil engineering firm Laker Group, in November 2021.

He proposed with a six-carat diamond ring while the couple was staying at the world-famous Claridge's hotel in Mayfair, London.

Joshua arranged an elaborate display in their suite, where he scattered petals, white hydrangeas and candles, and set up the initials of their first names in big lights.

The pair's love story started decades ago when Bridgett and Joshua were in high school together.

But they didn't start dating until a few years ago when the Covid pandemic brought her back to her home town of Mildura, Victoria.

'Bridgett had a crush on Joshua in school. Only due to Covid-19 she went back to our hometown of Mildura and they connected in 2020 and the rest is history,' her sister Bianca previously said.

The Roccisano sisters are co-founders of the eponymous clothing label Bianca and Bridgett and beauty brand Booby Tape, which has been described as a 'breast lift in a box'.

Worn by the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Booby Tape products are sold in more than 35 countries.

PM slammed for attending Kyle Sandilands’ wedding - Sky News Australia

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has copped backlash for attending radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands’ lavish Sydney wedding over the weekend.

Mr Albanese defended his decision to attend during two press conferences on Friday and Saturday, praising the broadcaster as a self-made “Australian success story” who lifted himself out of poverty.

"Yes, I was invited to the wedding, yes I was invited in the context of Kyle saying how happy he was with Tegan," he said on Saturday.

"The thing that occurs at a wedding, it's a public expression in front of people, invited guests, of love between two people. That's a good thing.

"I enjoy weddings and I will be going to the wedding.”

Sandilands’ best man was convicted drug smuggler Simon Main, with notorious former nightclub baron John Ibrahim also in the groom’s bridal party.

Deputy Liberal leader Sussan Ley said there was "nothing wrong" with Mr Albanese attending a friend's wedding but ridiculed the decision in the face of a growing cost of living crisis.

"It is curious the Prime Minister thinks he can take a day off just days before his first real Budget," Ms Ley said in a statement on Friday.

"The test of that budget will be whether Anthony Albanese gives Australians a start date for the $275 reduction in power prices, a start date for the cheaper mortgages Labor promised and a start date for real wage rises - it's hard to see how the Prime Minister can justify being there tomorrow when there are still no answers on those promises.

"Australians will rightly ask whether the Prime Minister should be spinning decks at a million dollar wedding when people can’t afford their rent. It can’t be right that the PM is kicking back tomorrow while aged care residents are being kicked out of their homes because of his government's failures."

People on social media questioned the Prime Minister’s decision to attend the do, with some on Twitter slamming the choice given the guest list.

Activist page Sleeping Giants took the Prime Minister to task over his attendance, highlighting some of Sandilands’ questionable record over the years in a Tweet.

“Sometimes you should just say NO Albo,” it wrote.

Another user accused Mr Albanese of “embracing the celebrity lifestyle more than caring about real issues”.

Cheek Media’s Hannah Ferguson also criticised the Prime Minister’s decision on social media.

“PM is attending wedding of a man who asked a child rape victim about her sexual experiences on air, called monkeypox ‘the big gay disease’ and undertook sensitivity training over comments about the Paralympics. Albo says he’s an ‘Australian success story’,” she wrote.

Premier Chris Minns also showed up to the nuptials, and both he and Mr Albanese avoided the media scurry outside the historic Swift Mansion, where the wedding took place.

Sandilands’ co-host Jackie O, TV presenter Karl Stefanovic and his wife Jasmine, singer Guy Sebastian and wife Jules and NRL player Beau Ryan were also among the 130 guests at the lavish Darling Point wedding.

The pair have been together since late 2019 and became engaged in January 2022 while on a romantic getaway in Far North Queensland.

They have a son, Otto, who was born earlier this year.

Chef Khanh Ong: ‘Monogamy seems unnatural to me’ - Sydney Morning Herald

Khanh Ong is a chef best known for MasterChef Australia, seasons 10 and 12. The 30-year-old opens up about his refugee parents, doing Australian Survivor with his sister, and why he’s putting his career above his love life.

“I am single now and dating, but I’m also at a stage in my life where I’m very selfish and putting a lot of energy into my food career.”

“I am single now and dating, but I’m also at a stage in my life where I’m very selfish and putting a lot of energy into my food career.” Credit: James Brickwood

My mum, Dzung Chau, uprooted her life in Vietnam and spent four years in an Indonesian refugee camp with Dad [Tam]. I was born in the camp and the family migrated to Australia a couple of years later.

Mum left her parents, three sisters and three brothers behind. Over the past 30 years she’s slowly been able to get most of them to move to Australia, but it all stems from her bravery.

When Mum talks about our passage to Australia on a boat, it doesn’t seem real. She tells me what it was like to be attacked by pirates and have propellers break in shark-infested waters. It was a terrifying ordeal.

My parents opened a butcher shop when I was eight, but then Dad passed away when I was in year 10. Mum turned the business into multiple franchises and later moved into commercial real estate. She inspires me every day.

Mum’s 54 and hasn’t met anybody since Dad died. He was her one true love. She says Dad isn’t replaceable. I always insist I’ll find her a companion and she replies, “Don’t bother.”

My sister Amy is six years younger than me. It wasn’t until my late teens that I really fell in love with the idea of having a sister. When Dad died, she was only 10 years old. I saw how strong and resilient she was. As an older brother, there was a part of me that wanted to protect her. I felt I had to step into that role, but she never asked me to.

Amy has her own jewellery business now. When I asked her to do Australian Survivor with me, she initially said no. Then she said yes because unless she agreed, I couldn’t do it myself.

I passed out in one episode of Survivor and everyone on set said, “You’re fine.” Amy screamed, “He doesn’t f---ing look fine.” I found this out afterwards. I love her feistiness.

My first kiss was with a girl when I was 14. It happened more from the pressure I felt from my peers. I thought I was gay but I didn’t have my first kiss with a boy until I was 18.

I told Mum I was gay when I was 19. The first thing she said was, “Do you want to go to Vietnam? We can make you famous there because LGBTIQ+ is trending hard.” I was like, “Mum, what are you talking about?” [Laughs]

My celebrity crush when I was younger was model Megan Gale. I confessed this when she and her partner took part in my podcast Feast. Now Megan’s partner, Shaun Hampson, is my celebrity crush.

My podcast partner, Sarah Davidson, applied for me to go on MasterChef and then told me. She single-handedly changed my life.

My friend Abbie Chatfield and I are really close. We don’t chat often, but we always write and have long 90-minute phone calls once a month where we complain to each other about various things. We all need that one person to bounce off.

I dated a guy for a year in 2019. We weren’t exclusive, but when we decided to make it exclusive, he ended up cheating. That made me put myself first and changed the way I look at life and relationships. I don’t think I am a monogamous person. It seems unnatural to me.

I am single now and dating, but I’m also at a stage in my life where I’m very selfish and putting a lot of energy into my food career. It’s unfair to expect someone to be there for the crazy ride.

I do want kids one day, but marriage isn’t something I care too much about. During COVID I looked into adopting. I want to give someone the best start they can have in life, and I feel I’d make a great dad.

Khanh Ong’s Wild Food premieres April 30 on SBS Food.

French actor Eva Green wins $1 million in spat over 'B movie' - 9News

Eva Green has been awarded $US1 million ($1.7 million) by a British court in a sensational dispute over the collapse of a film project she feared was destined to become a "B movie" that could ruin her career.
The film in question was a sci-fi thriller but the case played out in court like a melodrama. The producers of A Patriot portrayed the French actor as a diva. She had called one of the executive producers a "devious sociopath" and "pure vomit" and said the production manager was a "moron".
A High Court judge on Friday cut through the vitriol that he said threatened to complicate the case and deemed it "relatively straightforward", awarding Green the fee she had been promised for the production that folded in 2019.
Eva Green had called one of the executive producers a "devious sociopath" and "pure vomit" and said the production manager was a "moron". (AP)

Green, 42, who played Vesper Lynd in the 2006 version of the James Bond thriller Casino Royale, said her professional reputation had been upheld after she stood up to a small group of rich men who employed "bully-boy tactics" to use her as a scapegoat for their own failures.

Her lengthy statement, however, exposed her fragility in the face of criticism and the hurt she felt from what she claimed was misreporting in the press that "has been more painful than I can say".

"There are few things the media enjoys more than tearing a woman to pieces," Green said. "It felt like being set upon by hounds; I found myself misrepresented, quoted out of context and my desire to make the best possible film was made to look like female hysteria. It was cruel and it was untrue."

Justice Michael Green dismissed a countersuit brought by England-based film production company White Lantern Film that had said the actor made "excessive creative and financial demands" and torpedoed the production.

The judge said Green had not renounced or breached her obligations and was entitled to her £810,000 fee.

Green, 42, who played Vesper Lynd in the 2006 version of the James Bond thriller Casino Royale, said her professional reputation had been upheld after she stood up to a small group of rich men who employed "bully-boy tactics" to use her as a scapegoat for their own failures. (AP)

Green said she "fell in love" with the script for A Patriot and its environmental message but became increasingly concerned as corners were cut and production moved from Ireland to England.

"When an actor has appeared in a B movie, they are labeled as a B actor, you never get offered quality work ever again," she testified.

During the trial, the court was told that Green used an expletive when describing potential crew members as "peasants". She had said executive producer Jake Seal was "evil", a "devious sociopath" and a "mad man", and dubbed production manager Terry Bird a "moron".

She downplayed her biting words as her "Frenchness", which the judge dismissed as inadequate and not credible.

While Justice Green found in favour of Green, he gave poor reviews to both sides in his 71-page ruling.

"For such a perfectionist in her art, she was surprisingly under-prepared for her evidence," he wrote, calling the actor "in some senses a frustrating and unsatisfactory witness".

The judge said that the unpleasant things Green said about Seal were out of a genuine concern the film would not do the script justice, and he didn't altogether disagree with her criticism.

"I have to say that, having heard him give evidence, I can see how it might be possible to take an instant dislike to him," the judge wrote.

"He was at times patronising, sarcastic and denigrating. I found him to have an innate aggression and can understand why Ms Green and others might have been displeased to be told that they had to make the film under his full control."

Jerry Springer cause of death revealed as tributes pour in - Sky News Australia

US talk show icon Jerry Springer died from a short battle with pancreatic cancer, according to sources close to the star.

The Jerry Springer Show host died peacefully at his home in Chicago aged 79 on Thursday (local time).

Sources told TMZ that Springer had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer only a few short months ago before his health took a turn for the worse this week.

The publication reported he was working at a local Cincinnati radio station but was forced to quit last month as his cancer progressed.

Springer, a one-time mayor of Cincinnati, rose to prominence as the host of The Jerry Springer Show which had a near 27-year run with more than 4,000 episodes aired.

The series was known for its chair-wielding brawls and expletive-filled arguments often featuring guests accused of adultery or facing family problems.

Episodes usually covered salacious topics with their titles mimicking tabloid headlines like: I Slept with 251 Men in 10 Hours!, Stripper Sex Turned Me Straight, and Hooking Up With My Therapist.

Long-time friend and family spokesperson confirmed Springer's death in a statement on Thursday.

"Jerry's ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word," he said in a statement.

"He's irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart and humour will live on."

Ricki Lake, Springer's talk show contender, wrote: "Just waking to the very sad news of the passing of my long-time talk show rival and friend. May he rest in peace."

Sky New Australia host Piers Morgan, who worked alongside Springer on America's Got Talent, said he was gutted by the news.

"Jeez, this sucks. RIP Jerry Springer, 79," he tweeted.

"TV icon and  such an intelligent, warm, funny man. Loved working with him (on @AGT), loved hanging out with him (we lived in same hotel for two years), loved arguing with him (he loved his politics), loved everything about him. Gutting."

Fellow America's Got Talent host Sharon Osbourne also paid tribute, writing: "Television Legend and True Friend. Rest in Peace Jerry Springer."

Maury Povich, another industry rival of Springer's, told TMZ he was "shocked and saddened" by his passing.

"He was a friend and colleague. He was in his own way a unique showman. I will miss him," he said.

Springer began his career as a politician and unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 1970 before being elected to Cincinnati’s City Council in 1971.

He later resigned from council over allegations he paid for sex at a brothel using checks, but bounced back to serve a one-year term as mayor of Cincinnati in 1977.

Springer debuted his eponymous show in 1991 which faced criticism over the years for its exploitative nature before it came off the air in 2018 due to dwindling ratings.

Springer is survived by his 47-year-old daughter Katie and his older sister, Evelyn.

American television host and politician Jerry Springer dies aged 79 - ABC News

Jerry Springer, the former Cincinnati mayor, whose namesake TV show unleashed chaos on weekday afternoons, has died at 79.

After starting a career in politics, which was marred by a scandal he would go on to host the wildly successful television talk show named after him.

The show would often feature scandalous topics and devolve into fights between guests as the crowd would chant "Jerry Jerry, Jerry".

Springer died peacefully at home in suburban Chicago after a brief illness.

"Jerry's ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word," said Jene Galvin, a family spokesperson and friend of Springer's since 1970, in a statement.

"He's irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart and humour will live on."

Springer Show stayed constant for thousands of episodes

At its peak, The Jerry Springer Show was a ratings powerhouse and a US cultural pariah, synonymous with lurid drama.

Known for chair-throwing and bleep-filled arguments, the daytime talk show was a favourite American guilty pleasure over its 27-year run, at one point topping Oprah Winfrey's show.

Springer would often close the show by giving his "final thought" and saying "till next time, take care of yourself and each other".

Springer called the show "escapist entertainment," while others saw the show as contributing to a dumbing-down decline in American social values.

During the height of his fame, Springer was featured on an episode of The Simpsons, where he played himself and sought to intervene in an argument between Homer and space alien Kang over Maggie's paternity.

After more than 4,000 episodes, the show ended in 2018, never straying from its core salaciousness.

Some of its last episodes had such titles as "Stripper Sex Turned Me Straight," "Stop Pimpin' My Twin Sister," and "Hooking Up With My Therapist".

In a "Too Hot For TV" video released as his daily show neared 7 million viewers in the late 1990s, Springer offered a defence against disgust.

"Look, television does not and must not create values, it's merely a picture of all that's out there — the good, the bad, the ugly," Springer said

"Believe this — the politicians and companies that seek to control what each of us may watch are a far greater danger to America and our treasured freedom than any of our guests ever were or could be."

He also contended that the people on his show volunteered to be subjected to whatever ridicule or humiliation awaited them.

The show often pitted people against each other and encouraged all-out confrontation.()

Born in a London blitz shelter

Gerald Norman Springer was born on February 13, 1944, in a London underground railway station being used as a bomb shelter.

His parents, Richard and Margot, were German Jews who fled to England during the Holocaust, in which other relatives were killed in Nazi gas chambers.

They arrived in the United States when their son was 5 and settled in the Queens borough of New York City, where Springer got his first Yankees baseball gear on his way to becoming a lifelong fan.

He studied political science at Tulane University and got a law degree from Northwestern University.

He was active in politics much of his adult life, mulling a run for governor of Ohio as recently as 2017.

He entered the arena as an aide in Robert F Kennedy's ill-fated 1968 presidential campaign.

Springer ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1970 before being elected to Cincinnati city council in 1971.

He resigned in 1974 then bounced back, winning a council seat in 1975 and serving as mayor in 1977.

He later became a local television politics reporter with popular evening commentaries.

Springer began his talk show in 1991 and the US TV Guide ranked it first on a list of "Worst Shows in the History of Television," but it was ratings gold.

It made Springer a celebrity who would go on to host a liberal radio talk show and America's Got Talent, star in a movie called Ringmaster, and compete on Dancing With the Stars.
