Melissa was at the hospital taking her kids for an appointment when she heard some commotion in the foyer.
"It was a huge surprise," she told 9News.
"We just saw a swarm of people and we thought what's going on here? Early for an appointment so we thought we'd check it out and we heard Ed singing.
"It was really special. It was very heartfelt and the kids were singing along."
Sheeran also paid a visit to Melbourne Park, making a toast to his mate and mentor Michael Gudinski, who died almost two years ago.
Alongside his son Matt, the pair poured a glass of Gudinski's favourite wine.
He also made a stop at St Kilda Football Club, where he met players, staff and received his own personalised guernsey.
Sheeran has just finished shows in Brisbane and Sydney and will perform in Melbourne on March 2 and 3, before heading to Adelaide and Perth.
