Golden Globes 2023: Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Avatar, Top Gun Maverick among nominees along with Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, Hugh Jackman - ABC News

Australian stars Cate Blanchett, Margot Robbie, Hugh Jackman, Baz Luhrmann and Elizabeth Debicki are in the running to win Golden Globes next year. 

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced the nominees for 80th edition of the awards,with Luhrmann's Elvis, which was filmed in Queensland, in contention for best drama film against Tom Cruise's Top Gun Maverick, The Fabelmans, Tár and Avatar: The Way of Water.

Among the nominees for best actor in a drama is Brendan Fraser, who has said he will not attend. He has previously alleged he was groped in 2003 by Philip Berk, a longtime HFPA member and former president.

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the Globes, which will be telecast one again after being cancelled this year as the show attempts to mount a comeback amid allegations of ethical improprieties.

How is Avatar: Way of the Water nominated when it hasn't even screened for the public?

It's all about your location, Patrick, and in this case that location is LA!

In order to snag a Golden Globe nomination, films must be:

• At least 70 minutes in duration and 
• Released for at least a seven-day run in the Greater Los Angeles area, starting prior to midnight on December 31

On the TV side of things, the ABC public school comedy Abbott Elementary led with five nominations, including best series, musical or comedy.

There were also nods for its stars Quinta Brunson, Janelle James and Tyler James Williams. 

The Crown, Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Only Murders in the Building, Pam & Tommy and White Lotus all came away with four nominations.

I'm not going to spoil last night's season finale of The White Lotus (I'm not an animal) but we desperately need to talk about Meghann Fahy! She gave the performance of the season in this scene.

I can live with the fact she missed out on a Golden Globe... but give her an Emmy.

Meanwhile, congratulations to Aubrey Plaza and Jennifer Cooliage for both being nominated for best supporting actress in the limited series category.

It was a tight race, but Martin McDonagh’s feuding friends tale The Banshees of Inisherin led with eight nominations, including nods for actors Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s existential action comedy Everything Everywhere all at Once came in second with six nominations, including nods for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Babylon, featuring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie (among others), is the third-leading vote-getter with five nominations.

• Margot Robbie has been nominated for best actress for her role in Babylon, while Hugh Jackman is up for The Son.
  
• And Elizabeth Debicki is in the running for best supporting actress for her role in The Crown.
  

 As heard a little earlier, following intense controversy, longtime broadcaster NBC dropped the 2022 telecast.

The Comcast-owned CMCSA.O network agreed to air the Globes again in 2023 after the organisation made reforms.

But while the awards have got a new home for now, it's unclear if the event will attract the parade of A-list stars that it has in the past.

On the best drama actor list was The Whale star Brendan Fraser, who has said he will not attend the Globes because he has accused a former HFPA president of groping him in 2003.

The ex-official has said he pinched Fraser's buttock as a joke.

Current HFPA President Helen Hoehne told The Hollywood Reporter last week that she respected Fraser's decision but hoped the organisation could "regain Mr. Fraser’s trust, along with the trust of the entire entertainment community".

I really want Austin Butler to win (both here and at the Oscars), but if anyone beats him, I hope it's Brendan Fraser. That man is an absolute gem of a human.

Agree that Austin Butler should definitely get something purely for the fact that he still hasn't dropped that Elvis twang.

Or rather, who was surprisingly left off the list?

Punters have been quick to point to the omission of Danielle Deadwyler, and Jennifer Lawrence, with both actor's expected to pick up a nom for their roles in Till and Causeway.

On the other hand, Babylon - featuring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie (among others) - performed far better than expected. It’s actually the third-leading vote-getter with five nominations.

Some other notable mentions include...

• Sarah Jessica Parker, who wasn't nominated for And Just Like That (there's different opinions on this one...)
• Julia Roberts made it onto the list, but for her role in Gaslit, not Ticket to Paradise like many had expected.

While Top Gun Maverick is in the running for best drama film, Tom Cruise has been left off the nominations list.

Given he was among the stars and studios to boycott the Golden Globes last year (even returning his three Globes), this may not be all that surprising to some.

• Meanwhile, Will Smith's bid for Hollywood redemption has hit a snag, with his film Emancipation failing to pick up any nominations.
  

• The omission of Harry Styles for his role in My Policeman has also earned the ire of some, while TV series Yellowjackets and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power were left off the list.
• Behind the camera, no women were nominated for the best director award (only three women have ever won it).
