Catherine, Princess of Wales footage detail sparks furore online as ‘blatant lie’ exposed in Netflix’s Harry & Meghan trailer - 7NEWS

Social media has erupted over the inclusion of Catherine, Princess of Wales in a new trailer for the Netflix documentary series Harry & Meghan.

In the trailer for the upcoming series, the wife of Prince William has appeared for the second time, with some fans believing the program is “singling” her out.

Relations between the former “fab four” - The Prince and Princess of Wales and Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex - have been tense since the Sussexes stepped back as working royals in 2020.

In the first teaser of the documentary, released last week, Netflix made reference to the fragile relationship between the two couples with a glass-shattering sound effect between a teary photo of Meghan and a stern shot of Catherine.

In the full trailer released on Tuesday, it appears videos of Catherine hiding from the paparazzi have been used to demonstrate a point about privacy and a “war against Meghan”.

In what seems to be a video ahead of Catherine’s marriage into the royal family, the then Kate Middleton shielded her face from the surrounding photographers.

Along with Catherine, footage of Harry’s late mother Princess Diana was used.

There was no footage used of Meghan surrounded by photographers.

In the voiceover, Harry first referenced Diana, who died in a Paris car crash in 1997, saying he didn’t “want history to repeat itself”, with respect to the apparent parallel attention his wife Meghan was receiving.

“The pain and suffering of women marrying into this institution, this feeding frenzy,” he says, making reference to both Diana and Catherine through photographs.

“I was terrified.”

A photo emerged of Catherine standing stoic at a remembrance day service in 2021 with a headline from Life and Style on December 20, 2010.

The headline read: “Princess in crisis”.

The documentary also referenced headlines about Diana including, “The secret sadness of Princess Di” and “Di’s private battle”.

Also shown was a headline that read “Royal shame!” although it is unclear who that headline was about.

While there were videos of both Catherine and Diana, the only shot of Meghan and Harry was the couple sitting in a car and turning their heads to see what was behind.

A separate shot showed a car seemingly chasing their vehicle down the road.

Meghan added in the voiceover, “I realised, ‘They’re never going to protect you’.”

‘Not their right’

Viewers called out the Sussexes for claiming a “feeding frenzy” and “war” around Meghan, despite having no proof in footage, instead using videos and headlines of other females in the family.

“It’s funny that Meghan said she was chased by the paparazzi, but in the trailer, not even a video of her being chased by the paparazzi - only has videos of Diana and Kate,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Define the relevancy of Catherine who appeared two times in a trailer of a documentary that’s not about her,” said a second.

“When Netflix paid ‘$100million multi-year contract’ for a docuseries for a couple to tell their story for the millionth time, and the trailers are filled with stock photos and footage of Diana and Catherine being hounded by paparazzi,” added another.

“The second trailer is only showing Catherine and Diana being chased by the press. So many doctored images that it’s going to be hard to really take this thing seriously. It’s obvious they are trying to do a hit piece on Catherine,” a tweet said.

“Everyone has the right to tell their story,” one user wrote, “But in a one-minute trailer discussing how Harry and Meghan were poorly treated, you showed Catherine viciously hounded twice by the paps, Diana also hounded twice, and zero of Meghan.”

Other fans added that it was “not their right to tell Kate or Diana’s stories when they are harping on about theirs”.

“They are singling out Catherine. This is not meant to be about her!” a fan said.

Weighing in on the footage, Sunrise’s royal editor Rob Jobson said it “does matter, you can’t say you were hounded by the media using photographs of photographers outside a red carpet for a premiere and say they were there for you.

“It’s a blatant lie.

“To say that (Meghan and Diana) have the same issues did not happen in reality...”

“If you have got footage of what was going on then use the footage! Don’t use things that are trying to portray something that isn’t true,” he said.

Catherine’s ‘stern’ look

The Princess of Wales was also referenced in the original teaser trailer, something that left her friends “sickened”, a close source told Mail+.

The documentary showed a photo of Meghan in tears clutching a phone before the sound of glass shattering plays as it pans to Kate sending a ‘stern’ look towards the camera.

Over the image is a voiceover from Harry who says, “No one sees what happens behind closed doors”.

“The use of William and Catherine and the image and the way it’s presented, my goodness,” royal expert Richard Eden told the publication.
