Australia’s most popular children’s show Bluey reportedly to cease production - PerthNow

Australia’s most popular children’s show Bluey is reportedly set to cease production this year, according to sources close to the program.

The voice of the young actor who plays the main character Bluey is changing, sources close to the show’s Brisbane production hub say, according to Daily Mail Australia.

The voice actor is the child of the show’s producers, and their identity has been kept secret to protect their privacy.

After 130 episodes the child’s voice has begun to naturally mature, leaving producers with the decision to re-cast the role or end the show, the publication reported.

Producers are wrapping up the final 26 episodes of the show’s third season, and sources reportedly say there likely won’t be a fourth season.

But on Wednesday night, putting an end to the swirling rumors, Ludo Studios, who produces the show in Australia said “there are no plans to end the show.”

“We absolutely love Bluey and there are no plans to end the show. We always finish a season before planning the next one and right now we’re halfway through series three and really excited about the future — we can’t wait to share new episodes,” the production company said.

A spokesperson for BBC Studios, which distributes the international hit, wouldn’t be drawn on the rumours.

“Right now Ludo is working hard on series 3, which we’re thrilled to bring audiences this year. We’re very excited about the future of Bluey, which is now a huge global success, and there’s certainly much more to come.”

On Wednesday night Guardian Australia’s media correspondent Amanda Meade tweeted: “On the @OfficialBlueyTv story, both the producer and the broadcaster say it is completely untrue.”

Bluey has broken all the records for ABC’s iView streaming service, with more than 500 million views, and is watched by people in 60 countries across the world via a deal with media giant Disney.

Bluey books have sold more than one million copies and dominated the children’s book sale charts, while Bluey: The Beach last year became the first children’s picture book to be named book of the year at the Australian Book Industry awards.

Exactly how much money Bluey has made for its creator Joe Brumm and Queensland production group Ludo Studio is unclear. Since securing $20,000 for a seven-minute pilot episode, Bluey is now in its third season.

But celebrity manager Max Markson said the show’s success will have translated into big bucks behind the scenes.

“I think at the moment Bluey is earning more money than any other Australian personality, local or overseas,” he said last year.

“Disney are streaming it on the Disney network and that is enormous. It’s on a level which has surpassed anybody else in the Australian entertainment industry.

“Disney will see other ways of exploiting it: they’ll have a feature in their theme parks, same as they’ve had with Star Wars and other movie franchises.

“We haven’t had Bluey the movie yet.

“Books made JK Rowling a billionaire so the books are one area... the TV series is another, the music is a third side... then you get to the characters: every house has a Bluey and a Bingo (toy) or they should. So Joe Brumm and LUDO studios, they’ll be making a serious amount of money.”
