As if anymore proof was needed, Keanu Reeves good guy status has been given another boost with the revelation that he donated much of his salary from the original Matrix to a worthy cause.
The actor reportedly donated 70 per cent of his salary fro the movie to cancer research back in the 1990s.
Reeves made $14 million for the 1999 sci-fi film, before pocketing a further $49 million when it became a box office sensation.
According to Lad Bible, Reeves gave about $44 million of those earnings to leukaemia research, a cause close to his heart after his beloved sister Kim was diagnosed with blood cancer in 1991.
Kim spent a decade in and out of treatment before finally entering remission in 2001.
Reeves quietly started his own cancer foundation but didn’t make it known for several years.
“I have a private foundation that’s been running for five or six years and it helps aid a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research,” Reeves told Ladies Home Journal in 2009.
“I don’t like to attach my name to it, I just let the foundation do what it does.”
In 2020, the Speed actor auctioned off a 15-minute Zoom date with the proceedings going towards Camp Rainbow Gold, a summer program for Idaho children battling cancer.
The winning bidder paid more than $19,000 for the brief date with the Hollywood star.
Reeves new movie The Matrix Resurrections has crossed the $100 million box office mark worldwide.
Budgeted at a reported $190 million, the science-fiction film opened to mixed reviews and a sub-par opening weekend.
