Music festival Big Day Out co-founder Ken West dies, aged 64 - PerthNow

Ken West, co-founder of the era-defining national musical festival Big Day Out, has died, aged 64.

His family confirmed the news on Thursday evening.

“We bring unfortunate news that Ken West; a father, husband, mentor and most of all a legend, has passed away peacefully in his sleep,” his family said.

“Our family would appreciate respect and privacy during this difficult time.

“Ken was big and noisy in life, but passed quietly and peacefully.”

A maverick of the musical industry, West created the Big Day Out festival with business partner Viv Lees.

Kicking off in 1992 with a one-off event in Sydney starring Nirvana right when the Seattle grunge icons were breaking internationally, the event toured Australia and New Zealand until 2014.

When the BDO first came to Perth in 1993, the festival boasted a line-up headlined by Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds that local music lovers could barely believe.

In its heyday, the festival brought cutting edge and hugely popular international acts such as the Chemical Brothers, Rage Against the Machine, Foo Fighters, Patti Smith, PJ Harvey, Muse and Red Hot Chili Peppers to Australia.

The event was also a platform for home grown acts, including Powderfinger, Hilltop Hoods and Spiderbait to build a national following.

In January, West shared an excerpt from his book to mark the 30th anniversary of the inaugural Big Day Out in Sydney.

He is survived by his wife Cathy and son Oliver.
