Tim Minchin on how he bounced back after his movie was axed, and why Upright is a career highlight - NEWS.com.au

Tim Minchin has one of the most colourful resumes in Australia’s performing arts sector.

He wrote all the songs for Tony-award winning musical Matilda the Musical, once performed at the same show as Mariah Carey, and a casual OAM has also been peppered in there.

But nailing down one career highlight is surprisingly simple.

Minchin’s passion project, Australian TV drama Upright, was hailed by Buffy creator Joss Whedon as his “favourite show since Fleabag”.

“Time commitment small. Reward huge,” Whedon wrote to this 250,000 followers on Twitter last year.

Minchin, 45, who also helped write the series, said the 8-part series had to be one of his most cherished career highlights.

“As a creator, because I was involved all the way down the line and it worked out, Upright’s the thing I’ve been most involved in that fulfilled my hopes,” he told news.com.au.

“Which is really hard when you’re making art at a huge scale. There’s always something you can’t control. (But) Upright, I’m so proud of it and proud of everyone involved. I think it’s Upright.”

Watch Aussie original Upright now streaming on BINGE. New customers get your 14-day trial & start streaming instantly

Minchin leads an impressive cast in Upright, which streams on Binge, including up-and-coming teenager Milly Alcock, Heather Mitchell, Daniel Lapaine, Kate Box and Ella Scott Lynch.

He plays Lucky Flynn, a family outcast who learns his mother is dying and embarks on a journey to drive to the other side of Australia to see her, packing nothing but an upright piano.

He crosses paths with rogue teenager Meg (Alcock). Together they forge an unlikely bond, as they go on a wild adventure across the Nullarbor Plain.

As well as being witty, Upright is deeply emotional, which is not what you’d normally expect from Minchin, whose perhaps best known in Australia for being a comedian.

“I only really concentrated on comedy for six years, and then Matilda happened in the middle of all that, but I’ve always known I wanted to keep acting,” he said.

“I’ve sort of imposed on myself over the years a continuing apprenticeship to make sure I gathered the skills to be a lead in a show one day.”

Minchin said he didn’t expect Upright to receive the level of praise it has – but always knew it deserved to.

“You just hope people see what you are offering, and that is another factor with being known as one thing and trying to do another, you fear they will judge you in terms of what they expected instead of judging the work on its own terms,” he said.

“So we’ve been incredibly happy people have judged it on its own terms.”

It was a huge relief Upright came along when it did. Minchin was, and still is to an extent, reeling from the failure of the Australian-themed animated musical film Larrikins, for DreamWorks in 2017.

Minchin moved with his family to Los Angeles to work on the film, which was also starring Hugh Jackman.

But it was abruptly cancelled after four years of development, with Minchin declaring the decision “unbearable” at the time.

Upon reflection, Minchin says it was for the best, and is now making a similarly inspired Aussie outback film Back to the Outback, alongside Isla Fisher, set for release later this year.

“When Larrikins collapsed I kind of stomped my feet and got sad for a while, which you know, when you lose that much work you’re bound to feel a bit battered for a while,” he said.

“(Filmmaker) Harry (Cripps) came to me and said ‘I know you’re sick of animation, I know you said you never wanna do it again, but would you just write us one song’.

“Eventually they had Isla Fisher, Guy Pearce, Eric Bana and Celeste Barber on board, and they hadn’t cast the rock star koala named Pretty Boy, and they were looking for a big name, and eventually they just went ‘We should just ask Tim to do it’.”

More sadistic than ever, I’m a Celeb turned out to be reputation rehab for some - Sydney Morning Herald

And so the seventh season of I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! came to an end, and not for the first time a celebrity leveraged the jungle to complete a reputation rehabilitation, with former Bachelor runner-up Abbie Chatfield defying her critics and taking home the crown.

The evening began, as is tradition, by giving the viewing audience a little taste of the torture that the celebrities have been put through for the last few weeks, by forcing them to listen to host Chris Brown’s jokes.

Then came the reminiscence montage – the first of an estimated 1600 montages to be aired during the evening – where we looked back on all the magical memories from this season that we will carry with us forever. Mostly this involved shots of people trying not to vomit, but there were other touching moments. Remember when Toni Pearen got bitten by snakes? And when someone screamed in terror? And there was, like, a break-up in the style of a wedding? Did we imagine that? That wasn’t real, was it?

And remember when Toni got bitten by snakes? Good times.

The first elimination was an important one because it told us which of the seven celebrity finalists were the most widely disliked among the Australian public. It can hardly have come as a surprise that these were Ash Williams, whose laidback sense of humour and rugged good looks are exactly what most people loathe; and Travis Varcoe, who seems like an extremely decent and down-to-earth young man and is therefore not reality TV material. Each of the two eliminated men, naturally, got his own montage, Ash’s concentrating mainly on various other celebrities’ attempts to hump his leg. Julia asked Travis which was harder: playing a grand final or being on I’m a Celebrity. Travis was so nice that he didn’t even laugh in her face.

The next two celebrities to be booted were chef Colin Fassnidge, whose popularity plummeted as soon as the audience remembered who he was, and Toni, both of whom took grateful receipt of their own montages, which included cooking, eating and getting bitten by snakes.

By this stage we were still only halfway through the finale, but to pretend the remaining half hour or so contained a significant amount of entertainment would be to, in the immortal words of Dennis Lillee, tamper quite outrageously with the truth. What it did contain was montages, a few more montages, Chris scraping the bottom of his joke barrel ever more plaintively, Julia pausing for several minutes midway through every sentence, and finally, the revelation of the winner.

Of course it was Chatfield, who came second in the 2019 season of The Bachelor. This left Grant Denyer, Australia’s Most Loveable Man, and Jess Eva, from The Block and Triple M breakfast radio, as the runners-up.

It was a big night for Abbie fans, but the broader question was, how did I’m a Celebrity come through this strange pandemic-affected season? There’s no doubt this year was different, most obviously in the fact that the “jungle” was no such thing, being just a patch of woods in northern NSW. But then, the “jungle” they take the celebs to in Africa is never really a jungle either: they could’ve been shooting in NSW every year without anyone noticing.

In the end, the appeal of the show remained the same: the visceral thrill of seeing people who you’ve been conditioned to slightly resent undergo extremely unpleasant experiences. This year felt slightly more sadistic than ever, perhaps to compensate for the lack of exotic locales: the amount of utterly revolting substances the celebrities were forced to ingest was incredible, and the snakes were far bitier than we’d seen previously.

These factors tended to overshadow the show’s trademark “heartwarming” moments, but we still got to see the celebs crying about their families, which is always fun. In the hard times that the past year has brought the world, what we needed more than ever was a show that forced others to suffer more than we were, and that they delivered.

Abbie Chatfield reveals she lost 6kg in the jungle - NEWS.com.au

Queen of the jungle Abbie Chatfield lost 6kg in just 20 days during filming for I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!

But the passionate body positivity advocate was quick to clarify that she wasn’t trying to lose weight, and went straight to an Italian restaurant for a carb load when she finished up on the show.

RELATED: Stark contrast at I’m A Celeb afterparty

The Channel 10 reality star spoke to Nova’s Fitzy & Wippa this morning, telling the hosts she headed to Bondi institution Totti’s for a post-jungle feed after spending three weeks on a diet of rice and the occasional animal testicle.

“Someone on radio this morning was like, ‘Were you just trying not to eat’ … (I was like) what are you talking about, I wasn’t trying to lose weight!” she asserted.

“When I got out, two days after I went to Totti’s. Two burratas, two breads … vomited afterwards,” she joked.

RELATED: Abbie’s perfect late-night response to haters

Former Bachelor star Chatfield often talks about unrealistic body standards for women, becoming a body positivity beacon for her Instagram followers.

Among many posts of her “real” bikini body on her feed, last year, the star filmed herself posing to the camera to illustrate how influencers contort their bodies for the perfect shot.

“It’s the constantly contorting my body even when no one’s looking for me,” she wrote, admitting she is guilty of partaking in the trend.

“This is probably why I have lower back pain and this TikTok trend CALLED ME OUT. LMAO this isn’t a “I’m so bloated from bread!” post, it’s literally just what we look like when we don’t suck in and have a uterus, can we normalise it please? Even if it’s just for our lower backs?”

Chatfield was crowned the winner in last night’s I’m A Celeb finale after a dramatic season that saw her engage in a brief jungle romance with Ash Williams, clash with AFL legend Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico over his comments on her bikini and, most notably, get bitten by a snake during an intense challenge.

Speaking of the distressing moment on radio this morning, she said: “It was a bit dramatic though from me watching it back.

“Imagine the worst hangover of your life, you’re starving, you’re hot, you’re tired and then you get bitten. Everything’s amplified,” she explained, adding that Dr Chris Brown’s reaction didn’t help the situation.

“He kept saying, ‘Calm down’ … Thanks Chris,” she joked.

“In hindsight … I was being a bit dramatic. People are like, ‘This show should be cancelled.’ I’m like … just don’t put your hand in a pit of snakes.”

Chatfield beat out Gold Logie winner Grant Denyer for the crown last night, with the former Family Feud host photographed looking salty at the afterparty while Abbie danced up a storm and downed champagne.

“He was saying to me all day, “I hope you win.” I was like … don’t make me feel bad, I’m not going to say it back to you,” the ever-candid star joked today.

Inside Matt Damon's Byron Bay mansion which cost $100,000 for 14 days - NEWS.com.au

Now this is our idea of coronavirus quarantine.

Blockbuster star Matt Damon was forced to enter mandatory isolation on his arrival to Australia two weeks ago ahead of filming Thor: Love And Thunder.

The 50-year-old US actor, along with his wife Luciana Barroso and their three children, reportedly spent 14 days at a breathtaking European-style home in Knockrow, just outside of Byron Bay.

The eight-bedroom home, dubbed Chateau Du Soleil, costs $7000 a night on Airbnb, making a grand total of almost $100,000 for two weeks, and boasts a swimming pool, tennis court, manicured gardens, wine cooler and sweeping ocean views.

The family finished their stint in quarantine on Sunday.

The latest Thor movie is being filmed in Sydney, and will also star an A-list cast including Byron Bay resident Chris Hemsworth, as well as Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt and Christian Bale. It will be directed by New Zealand director Taika Waititi.

Damon, who arrived in Sydney via private jet on January 17, earlier said he was “so excited” to be heading Down Under for work, after he enjoyed a lengthy stint here in 2019.

“I’m so excited that my family and I will be able to call Australia home for the next few months,” he said.

“Australian film crews are world-renowned for their professionalism and are a joy to work with so the 14 days of quarantine will be well worth it.”

Damon’s role in the Marvel film remains a mystery.

Eagle-eyed fans will have previously spotted Damon in Thor: Ragnarok in 2017 cameoing as an actor playing Loki in a stage play in Asgard.

It may be that Damon will play the same actor again but he may also be slated for a larger role.

Thor: Love And Thunder is the fourth Thor movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The last we saw the title character, Thor (Hemsworth) was headed back out into space with the Guardians Of The Galaxy crew.

Production is expected to pump $178 million into the local economy, create 2500 jobs and use the services of 1650 Australian businesses.

Meghan Markle blames palace after first names erased from Archie’s birth certificate - NEWS.com.au

Meghan Markle has given a rare and blunt response to reports she erased her first names from Archie’s birth certificate.

Reports emerged yesterday Prince Harry and Meghan had secretly removed her birth names “Rachel Meghan” on birth papers in 2019, leaving just “Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex”.

But the duchess has swiftly hit back and said the Palace initiated the change in a statement provided to Page Six, with a spokesperson for Meghan saying: “The change of name on public documents in 2019 was dictated by The Palace, as confirmed by documents from senior Palace officials. This was not requested by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex nor by The Duke of Sussex.”

RELATED: Grim warning for Queen

The change was made on June 5 amid rumours of a growing rift between Harry, his brother Prince William and their wives Meghan and Kate Middleton.

Days later, the Sussexes walked away from the Fab Four’s joint charity.

They quit as senior members of the royal family in Jnauary 2020, and now live in Montecito, California.

British media initially reported the unprecedented move to remove her first names could have been seen as a snub to the Cambridges, who included Kate’s names on her children’s certificates.

It was also assumed Harry could have been aligning his wife with mum Princess Diana, who always used “Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales”.

RELATED: Harry and Meghan’s 300 day dilemma

Archie was born on May 6, 2019, and his birth was registered on May 17.

The Queen’s ex-press secretary Dickie Arbiter said: “Maybe this was an early part of their plan.”

Lady Colin Campbell, who spotted the amendment, said: “It is extraordinary and raises all kinds of questions about what the Sussexes were thinking.”

Expert Ingrid Seward said: “For a royal to change a birth certificate is unprecedented but to remove forenames is remarkable.

“Perhaps this is another sign they were desperate to do something different to the Cambridges.”

I’m A Celeb 2021 finale: Viewers react to Toni Pearen missing out on top spot - NEWS.com.au

Crowd favourite Abbie Chatfield may have walked away as queen of the I’m A Celeb jungle, but that doesn’t mean viewers were happy with the final result.

Despite being a hit with viewers on the Channel 10 reality TV show, Toni Pearen was booted early and failed to crack the top three.

RELATED: Ex-Bachelor makes ‘desperate’ final plea

The former Australia’s Funniest Home Video Show presenter came fourth overall, sliding behind the winner Abbie, Grant Denyer and Jess Eva.

Fans of the reality show were shocked with the result, with some saying Toni was “robbed” and the results were “rigged”.

Abbie responded to her haters in her trademark style, posting this to her Instagram Stories after midnight last night:

“All hail KWEEN (sic) Toni,” one person wrote after Pearen was eliminated from the competition.

“Fourth? What was our country thinking,” another added. “We demand a recount.”

Pearen endeared herself to viewers early on in the season when she bravely continued on after being bitten on the face three times by snakes during a confronting challenge.

The TV host was taking part in a challenge alongside comedian Ash Williams and former AFL star Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico on the reality show, when she had to put her head into a box filled with critters every time she got an answer wrong.

Within seconds of Pearen putting her head into the box, one of the snakes lunged and bit her on the face.

But the former soap star lost some popularity when she was accused of being rude to ex-Gogglebox stars Adam and Symon when they entered the camp halfway through the season as intruders.

Meghan Markle secretly erases her first names from Archie’s birth certificate in ‘snub to Kate & Wills’ - NEWS.com.au

Harry and Meghan secretly erased her first names from son Archie’s birth papers.

“Rachel Meghan” was taken out to leave just “Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex”.

The unprecedented move could be seen as a snub to the Cambridges who have included Kate’s names on her children’s certificates.

It may also be viewed as Harry aligning his wife with mum Di, who always used “Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales”.

Archie was born on May 6, 2019, and his birth was registered on May 17.

The change was made on June 5 amid rumours of a growing rift between Harry, brother William and their partners.

Days later, the Sussexes walked away from the Fab Four’s joint charity.

Within months they quit royal life.

Harry and Meghan were approached for comment.

I'm a Celeb live finale 2021: Abbie Chatfield beats Grant Denyer in finale - NEWS.com.au

Ex-Bachelor contestant Abbie Chatfield was crowned Queen of the Jungle in Sunday night’s finale.

Seven celebrities had a chance of winning the live finale: Grant Denyer, Abbie Chatfield, Jess Eva, Travis Varcoe, Ash Williams, Toni Pearen and Colin Fassnidge.

The winner was determined by votes from the public and at the end of the night it came down to Abbie and Grant.

But Abbie walked away with the title and won $100,000 for her chosen charity, Dementia Australia.

Abbie wins!
Abbie wins!

RELATED: Abbie ‘begged’ fans to vote for her before finale

Abbie was arguably this season’s most talked about contestant. She clashed with Dipper over a comment he made about her bikini and later said his ‘joke’ was “part of rape culture“, she had a jungle romance with Ash, and she was distraught after being bitten on the hand by a snake in a shocking challenge that outraged some viewers.

Some people were even upset that Abbie, who appeared on Matt Agnew’s season of The Bachelor in 2019, was cast on the show in the first place.

I guess she showed them!

Here’s how the finale unfolded.

Updates

Abbie nominated Dementia Australia as her chosen charity because her grandma, who passed away last June, had dementia.

Abbie broke down in tears in a video on the I'm a Celeb site as she spoke about her grandma's decline.

At the end of the video she laughed as she said to the camera: "When grandma passed away was when I had the first interview for this show. The last time I saw her I told her about the show and she told me to tell Dr Chris Brown she had a crush on him!"

ABBIE CHATFIELD HAS WON!

As the bookies predicted, Abbie walked away with the crown ahead of Grant Denyer.

Jess Eva is out!

The Triple M radio host finished third meaning the winner will either be Grant or Abbie.

Jess was rushed to hospital last week because she had bugs stuck in her ears from her time in the jungle (reminder – it was filmed in December!) You can read about that here

Didn't have a single clue who Jess was before the show, became my favourite.

Someone on Twitter just asked a great question about Mel Buttle who quit the show after seeing a snake near camp.

Why did @MelindaButtle agree to go on to @ImACelebrityAU when there was obviously going to be snakes on the show? #imacelebrityau

I interviewed Mel after she left the show and asked her if she had a deal with producers that meant she wouldn't have to do a challenge with any snakes. A Ten publicist didn't allow her to answer the question. Read into that what you will.

They're starting to reveal some of the results from the public voting.

Finishing in seventh place was Ash Williams.

Finishing in sixth place was Travis Varcoe.

It's not that surprising that Ash got the least number of votes – he's been embroiled in some controversy in the last couple of weeks due to an upcoming court case.

But Travis finishing sixth, that is a surprise. Some on Twitter have suggested he didn't get enough airtime on the show this season.

Travis was amazing, even with the little screen time he got, his amazing personality really shined through. Seemed like an absolute top bloke #ImACelebrityAU

Mel Buttle was the first celeb to quit the jungle this year.

She bailed due to her fear of snakes.

Mel is in the studio tonight and Dr Chris Brown said to her: "Mel, congratulations, you're a member of a very exclusive club, the 'leaving the jungle a bit earlier than expected' club. Obvious question, have you caught up for a game of mixed doubles with Bernard Tomic?"

(Bernard Tomic infamously quit the show very quickly a few years ago.)

Mel replied: "You know I don't touch balls, Dr Chris."

Boom – bloody hell she's funny

The seven remaining celebs are in the studio and wowsers do they look different than they did when they were in the jungle (reminder: all of the show apart from tonight's finale was filmed in December)

Channel 7 personality Andrew O’Keefe facing domestic violence charge - Sydney Morning Herald

Channel 7 host and former White Ribbon chairman, Andrew O’Keefe, was arrested by police and charged over an alleged domestic assault on his partner in Sydney overnight.

Arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning, O’Keefe, 49, is due to face Waverley Court on Thursday, when police will allege the former Weekend Sunrise host assaulted his partner, Orly Lavee, at an apartment in Randwick just before 1am.

The host of The Chase Australia was arrested on a nearby street at about 3.30am, before being taken to Maroubra police station, where he was charged with common assault. He was granted bail on the condition avoid all contact with Ms Lavee, unless through a lawyer.

In a statement on Sunday, NSW Police said: “Just before 1am, officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command attended a Randwick unit, after reports a 41-year-old woman had allegedly been assaulted in a domestic violence related incident.”

“Following inquiries, police arrested a 49-year-old man nearby about 3.30am.

“He was taken to Maroubra police station where he was charged with common assault (DV) and granted conditional bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on Thursday, 4 February 2021.”

O’Keefe, a former lawyer, and son of former NSW Supreme Court justice, Barry O’Keefe, was a founding member of the domestic violence charity, the White Ribbon Foundation, where he served as chairman in 2017. The organisation went into liquidation in 2019.

O’Keefe was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2017 for his service to television and charity work.

Seven West Media has been approached for comment.

The Dig: Director Simon Stone on what 2021 audiences can learn from Sutton Hoo discovery - NEWS.com.au

On the surface, there’s little to tie together the story of a 1939 archaeological discovery in England with our present pandemic moment.

But a connection between the two is exactly what the director of Netflix film The Dig, Australian Simon Stone, hopes audiences will find.

The Dig tells the true story of the Sutton Hoo discovery, an immensely significant archaeological bonanza unearthed from what turned out to be burial mounds in Suffolk, right as the UK was preparing for World War II.

“Looking for an artefact from the sixth century while planes are flying overhead and the war is looming seems slightly ostrich-like, to stick your head in the earth and become obsessed with the past,” Stone explained to news.com.au over the phone from his home in Germany.

“But at the centre of the story is that by searching for the lessons of the past, they end up creating a sense of certainly that this too will pass.

“They were entering the worst war that the world has ever seen and yet that too will become a moment in history. Of course, that has a melancholy truth to it, but it’s also incredibly reassuring because what you know is that there will be a future because things change.

“Our history is the story of constant change, and I think for audience watching in the pandemic, it’s also a hopeful message.

“It can feel, and I certainly feel a bit like this, as the longer the lockdowns go, the longer restrictions go, the longer where we live in a world that would have been unrecognisable to us a year ago, the more we stop believing that things will ever be the way that we remembered them to be.

“But there are moments in history that are truly exceptional, where the world changed remarkably and then a certain normalcy returned. And that’s reassuring in a story like this, at a time like this.”

RELATED: The Dig movie review

Stone has been locked down for too long to count in Germany, and perhaps that’s why he’s feeling philosophical about the inevitable transience of tumultuous times.

But it’s also true that the story of The Dig, of this event 80 years in the past, can speak to our present moment, not just in the obvious metaphor of archaeology and all the physical traces of ourselves we leave behind for future generations, but in how we come together for the common good.

Anecdotally, many people in the past year have found the importance of support networks when we find our daily lives changed and disconnected – and increasingly those support networks aren’t just our friends and family, but also the community at large.

For Stone, he sees that as foundational in The Dig.

“I wanted the film to be as much about solidarity and community, and how people can reach across the boundaries of difference – of class difference, of gender difference – and they can find a way to unite in the face of a crisis.”

Starring Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes, plus a supporting cast that includes Ben Chaplin, Lily James and Johnny Flynn, The Dig details landowner Edith Pretty’s (Mulligan) mission to discover what lay beneath mounds on her property.

To that end, she commissioned Basil Brown, a working-class archaeologist without the “correct” fancy qualifications from Oxbridge, to excavate the site. What they find is an intact burial ship dating to Anglo-Saxon times, a discovery that up-ends orthodoxy about culture in the Dark Ages.

RELATED: Everything new to streaming in February

The Dig is a beautiful film, set in the soft light and wide landscapes of the Suffolk countryside, but it’s the performances from Mulligan and Fiennes that really bring the endeavour home.

Stone was rapt to have acting luminaries in his project.

“When you’re working with people as talented as those two, and actually the whole cast, their level forces your work to be better,” he said. “And you just have to rise to their level and the level that they should expect of their director.

“I, perversely, relish that pressure and I like putting myself in situations where I’ve got these powerhouse people around me, and it forces me to try and get to their level, to try and match what they’re doing on screen.”

The Dig is only Stone’s second feature but for an artist who’s come from the theatre, there’s no staginess to his screen work, which feel cinematic and dynamic. And he’s no neophyte to working with powerhouse actors.

In many circles, he’s considered something of a powerhouse himself, even if some of his theatre work has been seen as disrupting the classics in a way that some establishment folk would consider too avant-garde.

Having founded an independent theatre company, The Hayloft Project, in his early 20s, Stone has been resident director at Belvoir and staged productions at the Sydney Theatre Company and the Melbourne Theatre Company.

After he made his first feature, The Daughter , in Australia with Ewen Leslie, Miranda Otto and Sam Neill, he moved to Europe.

For the past five years, he has worked across the continent, in the UK and in New York, where he directed a modern update of Medea starring Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale, which played just before the world went into lockdown.

But even during lockdown in Germany, Stone has made four stage shows, but none of them have gone in front of an audience – yet.

“Who knows when it will ever open?” he wondered. “It’s very strange. I’m very lucky to be working in this situation but it’s also weird to be making theatre for no audience.”

Thanks to state support of the arts in Germany, the industry has remained employed where in other parts of the world, including in Australia in the early part of the pandemic, it has been under immense pressure.

“It’s a really strong argument, especially if you look at Australia as well, for more state support of the arts because then you don’t suddenly have an entire industry unemployed in a moment of crisis.”

RELATED: A different kind of marriage breakdown in Us

It’s not just that cultural enrichment bolsters societies and civilisations, Stone said it’s also an economic no-brainer.

“This really is the paradoxical thing, how much money entertainment actually makes,” he explained. “It’s a significant cornerstone of the economy and yet people will dismiss it as some kind of hobby that we’ve got.

“You can’t make an economic argument against it but the attitude towards artists becomes really clear when you’re in a crisis because it reveals so much about what underlying assumptions were around before the crisis.

“But what do you do when you go home? You turn on Netflix and everything you’re watching was created by an artist.

“If you stop looking at your phone, stop looking at your computer, stop listening to the radio, see how that would feel, what an epic silence would suddenly fill your life.”

When people are locked down, the value of art and culture suddenly becomes glaringly obvious.

While Stone has been busy mounting theatrical productions that can’t, for the moment, open, he hopes it won’t be five years between his second and third film, as it was between his first two.

Now that he’s more settled in Europe, where he also started working in opera, he wants to step onto another film set before too long.

“I can’t promise anything but I’m excited at the prospect of taking everything I’ve now learnt. Each film you make is such a huge learning curve so I’m really hoping that an opportunity to do a third movie comes soon.”

The Dig is streaming now on Netflix

Inside the glamorous lives of Princess Diana’s twin nieces - NEWS.com.au

Their glamorous aunt, Princess Diana, was one of the most photographed women in the world – and now her two nieces Eliza and Amelia Spencer have posed for a stunning magazine cover together.

The 28-year-old twins have opened up in a very rare interview about their lives to society bible Tatler, having largely lived out of the spotlight until now.

The pair spent their early years in the Spencers’ family home, Althorp, in Northamptonshire, before moving to South Africa with their parents, Earl Spencer and Victoria Aitken, in 1995 – two years before Diana’s death.

The same year he lost his sister, Earl Spencer and his wife also divorced – with him choosing to return to the UK while his ex-wife remained in Cape Town with their kids.

Now, Eliza and Amelia have opened up about their lives away from the spotlight, and discussed the lasting impression their “incredibly warm, maternal and loving” aunt, Diana, had on them both. They were just five years old when she died.

Here we look inside the twins’ glamorous lives – from stunning getaways to endless beach days and handsome partners …

SEAFRONT STAYS AND LAVISH HOMES

Despite remaining with their mother in Cape Town, Eliza and Amelia have always been close to their father and the wider Royal family.

They both attended Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in 2011.

As two of seven children, they grew up with siblings Kitty and Louis, then their father went on to marry twice more and have three more kids: Edmund Charles Spencer and Lady Lara Spencer with ex-wife Caroline Freud, and Lady Charlotte Diana Spencer with third wife, Karen Gordon.

They may not have grown up in a palace, but Eliza and Amelia certainly appear to have lived in luxury in Cape Town.

Older sister Kitty gave a glimpse at what appeared to be a huge family home in 2018, with a giant infinity pool looking out over the sea.

Her siblings have also shared snaps in front of an incredible sea view, after they reunited with their brother, Louis.

The family regularly enjoy day trips around Cape Town, while they’ve also posted snaps relaxing together surrounded by sprawling fields.

STUNNING HOLIDAYS AROUND THE WORLD

While the siblings appear to love nothing more than spending quality time at home, they’ve also shared snaps from some beautiful holidays abroad over the years too.

Their sister Kitty is known for her globetrotting, and Eliza in particular appears to share the same passion for travel.

She recently celebrated her four-year anniversary with partner Channing Millerd, sharing a photo of them both on the River Thames in London, and she’s also previously posted an incredible photo from a ski break together.

More recently, she shared a throwback photo looking at out a magnificent sunset in Mauritius, while she enjoyed a stunning boat trip in Port d’Andratx in 2019 too.

Meanwhile, she appears to have followed in her aunt’s inspiring footsteps with a trip to Malawi with charity, United Purpose.

Amelia, meanwhile, has shared a stream of photos from trips around South Africa – including stays at luxury vineyards and eye-popping beaches.

She also enjoyed a break in St Tropez with her now-fiance Greg Mallett in 2015, with the pair posing for a sunny snap together in Place des Lices, while they also jetted to California in 2013.

A ROMANTIC PROPOSAL

Amelia announced her engagement to handsome fiance, Greg, the nephew of former South African rugby coach Nick Mallett, in July last year.

And her father revealed on social media that Greg had stuck with tradition and asked for his blessing before popping the question.

Charles Spencer tweeted at the time: “So happy for my daughter, Amelia, engaged to her boyfriend of 11 years, Greg – it’s wonderful to hear them both so excited about their future.

“Sending them both love, and every good wish for their life together. I love that Greg asked my blessing before proposing. Very sweet.”

The groom-to-be also announced the happy news on Instagram, writing: “So this was the best day of my life.”

Estate agent Greg, nicknamed Grizzle, had been dating Amelia for 11 years, according to Tatler, after meeting at the University of Cape Town.

The pair are now considering where to say ‘I Do’, with Amelia telling Tatler that her father has suggested Althorp for the venue.

She said: “It’s our family home, it’s beautiful. We would be very lucky to get married there, but Cape Town is where we grew up and there is a possibility that we might do it here, too.”

Her sister Eliza is also very loved up with her partner Channing, a marketing executive who attended the same school as Eliza’s brother.

The pair regularly pose for photos together, enjoying stunning holidays around the world.

And with their royally glam lives providing the backdrop, they look set to live happily ever after.
