The 'Boyz n the Hood' helmer is in the ICU and "under great medical care," according to his family.
John Singleton suffered a stroke at the hospital earlier this week but is under "great medical care," the Singleton family said in a statement on Saturday after multiple reports that the director had been hospitalized.
The 51-year-old Boyz n the Hood helmer had the episode while seeking medical attention, contrary to some prior reports, the family said. "On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital. John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care," their statement read. "We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues."
Singleton, whose directing resume includes debut Boyz n the Hood, which earned him Oscar nominations for best director and best original screenplay, Shaft, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Four Brothers, the music video for Michael Jackon's "Remember the Time," and episodes of Empire, Billions, 30 for 30 and American Crime Story, is currently co-creator and executive producer of FX's Snowfall, which was renewed for a third season in September. As of earlier this month, the cast was doing a table read for season three's sixth episode.
"We are sad to learn the news of John’s condition, but we know he's a fighter. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at FX and his Snowfall family are with him and we are hopeful for a complete and speedy recovery," FX Networks said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
Throughout the day on Saturday, entertainment-industry heavweights, including Snoop Dogg, showrunners for Billions, Pose and Chicago Fire and directors William Friedkin and Jonathan Levine, offered well wishes to the director.
