After Queen’s death, Kate Middleton collects kids from school alone as family grieves - 7NEWS

In the wake of Queen Elizabeth’s death, a tense-looking Kate Middleton has been photographed leaving Windsor on her own to pick up children Louis, Charlotte and George from school.

For the moment at least, the Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge, as she is now known, will remain in England while her husband, Prince William, is in Scotland.

The 96-year-old monarch died at Balmoral, her Scottish summer residence, on Thursday local time.

Overnight, family members rushed to Balmoral after doctors said they were concerned about the Queen’s health.

Prince Charles - now King Charles III - his wife Camilla and Princess Anne were already in Scotland when doctors first raised concerns about the Queen’s health.

According to The Sun, King Charles’ helicopter was seen landing on the grounds of Balmoral on Thursday morning (local time).

Camilla travelled to Balmoral after cancelling an event at Monklands Hospital’s cancer support centre known as Maggie’s Lanarkshire, in Airdrie.

Soon after, Prince William was seeing driving a car carrying Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, into the castle.

It’s understood Prince Harry was not by his grandmother’s side when she passed, but was on his way to Scotland.

According to PEOPLE, Harry’s flight landed at Aberdeen Airport not long after the public announcement of the Queen’s death.

He was seen arriving at Balmoral in the back of a black car looking mournful, with his wife Meghan not expected to join him at this time.

Harry and Meghan were in Europe to visit several charities they are involved with.

William, Kate and their children were pictured smiling as they attended a “prep day” on September 7.

The mood now is obviously very different, with sadness and tension etched into the Duchess’ face as, somewhat appropriately, raindrops trickled down the windows of her car.

The Duchess had a strong relationship with Queen Elizabeth and they were often pictured smiling and laughing together.

She once described Elizabeth as “very supportive” and a “doting granny” who was both thoughtful and caring.

“She’s been very generous and not sort of forceful at all in any of her views,” she once said of Her Majesty.

“I feel she’s been sort of a gentle guidance, really, for me.”
