Joe Exotic of 'Tiger King' Still Has His Wild Music Videos on YouTube - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

No other true-crime series is getting as much buzz on Netflix lately than Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. Millions of quarantined viewers delved into this morbidly fascinating look exploring big cat enthusiasts who run private zoos throughout America. The central focus is on the rivalry between “Joe Exotic” (Joseph Maldonado-Passage) and Carole Baskin, owners of exotic wild animal parks in Oklahoma and Florida, respectively.

All attention is on Joe Exotic, however, who is now in prison for conspiring to kill Baskin due to the latter trying for years to shut down Maldonado-Passage’s zoo.

The latter is almost like a caricature in the series, inspiring the curious to go back and dig up his old digital footprints. It turns out those music videos featured in the series are available on his old YouTube channel, where he once tried finding fame as a country singer.

Joe Exotic’s YouTube Channel for the curious

One could argue Maldonado-Passage will end up having a movie biopic made about him soon considering his unique persona.

Recently, Elite Daily found Maldonado-Passage’s old YouTube channel, which somehow still exists. Despite being convicted to 22 years in prison last year, he appears to be getting millions of views on his YouTube Channel as an income generator.

Whatever one thinks of that ethically, a few music videos he made there are beyond the pale. While the Tiger King documentary does focus a bit on his singer-songwriter endeavors, watching the videos might offer more than a few chills.

For true-crime purists, one particular music video may intrigue based on the stunning zoo rivalry between Maldonado-Passage and Baskin.

The unbelievable music videos on JoeExoticTV

If fans visit JoeExoticTV on YouTube, more than music videos are found there. Maldonado-Passage posted numerous videos defending his zoo and showcasing the general craziness going on around his property. He even documented his political aspirations, including running for President.

When watching Maldonado-Passage, everyone can see how effective of a salesman he was. The things he and his team did in his exotic zoo were often jaw-dropping if also angering wild animal activists. Delving into the music videos allows viewers to look into the real mindset of the man.

An eerie music video he made called Here Kitty Kitty is just one example. What sounds like a harmless satiric country music video becomes much larger since the video focuses on Baskin. Many media outlets have explored the rumors she killed her own husband and fed his corpse to the tigers on her Florida-based big cat sanctuary.

Maldonado-Passage played this to the hilt in his video, offering a dark taste of his pursuit of getting back at Baskin. Not that he stopped there with creating music videos with seeming hidden messages.

Some of Joe Exotic’s music videos may bring divided opinion

Another music video called Pretty Woman Lover is catchy country, but tries to make it look like he was a ladies man. Maldonado-Passage is openly gay, making the video all the more ironic.

Not all his videos were made to push everyone’s buttons. Some of them seemed to have good intentions, including one called I Saw a Tiger. This was a slow country ballad made to raise money to fight against tiger poaching in China.

Some will say videos like this were a worthy endeavor, making the portrait of Maldonado-Passage all the more complex as a Netflix subject. Now with him demanding a pardon from the President while in prison, it makes the mind reel on what might happen next.

Finding fame while in prison can sometimes bring unpredictable outcomes. Whatever happens next, the “gay, gun-toting cowboy with a mullet” is now a celebrity as he wanted. If he can prove in a $94 million lawsuit the federal government falsely imprisoned him, he might end up being one of the most controversial notables in America.

Christopher Meloni As ‘SVU’ Character Elliot Stabler To Headline New Dick Wolf Drama Series For NBC - Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: A beloved TV character is coming back. NBC has given a 13-episode series order to a new Dick Wolf crime drama series starring Christopher Meloni reprising his Law & Order: SVU role as Elliot Stabler. The SVU spinoff drama, which marks the actor’s return to Wolf World, revolves around the NYPD organized crime unit led by Stabler (Meloni). It is the first show to come out of the massive new five-year, nine-figure, multi-platform deal Wolf signed with Universal Television last month, which includes multiple series commitments.

Dick Wolf Universal Television

The new series, which could be branded as part of the Law & Order franchise, is executive produced by Wolf, Arthur W. Forney and Peter Jankowski for Wolf Entertainment and Universal TV, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios. I hear former Chicago P.D showrunner Matt Olmstead is being eyed as writer-showrunner.

Like Law & Order: SVU, headlined by Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson, the new drama is set in New York, allowing for potential seamless crossovers with SVU, set at another NYPD unit, and for Benson-Stabler reunions.

With their undeniable on-screen chemistry and great rapport on and off the set, Hargitay and Meloni were one of television’s most popular duos for over a decade.

Meloni was the male lead opposite Hargitay for SVU‘s first 12 seasons, with their characters partners and best friends. Stabler is an Irish American who, during the time he was featured on SVU, was married (his wife Kathy was played by Isabel Gillies) with five children. The role earned Meloni a lead actor in a drama series Emmy nomination in 2006.

Following Meloni’s exit after Season 12, his character was written off, with Stabler abruptly retiring from the police force.

Since departing SVU in 2011, Meloni headlined the Syfy series Happy! and Fox comedy series Surviving Jack, starred on the praised WGA America series Underground, and did memorable arcs on True Blood and The Handmaid’s Tale.

During his almost nine years away from SVU, Meloni remained close with Hargitay and the Wolf family. In January, the former co-stars appeared together, alongside Wolf, in The Paley Center Salutes Law & Order: SVU TV special on NBC. It was around that time I first heard chatter of a potential new Wolf series with Meloni. Formal conversations started soon thereafter.

Meloni is repped by Gersh and Industry Entertainment.

On NBC, the new series will join the four existing Dick Wolf series, SVU and the three Chicago dramas, all of which received massive three-year renewals last month as part of Wolf’s new pact. The network also has been developing a Law & Order: Hate Crimes offshoot series.

Tomie dePaola, ‘Strega Nona’ Author and Illustrator, Dies at 85 - The New York Times

Tomie dePaola, the celebrated author and illustrator whose scores of beloved children’s books nurtured and delighted several generations of readers, died on Monday in Lebanon, N.H. He was 85.

His literary agent, Doug Whiteman, said the cause was complications of an operation that Mr. dePaola had after a fall.

Mr. dePaola, whose best-known books were probably the “Strega Nona” series, wrote or illustrated more than 270 books. The ones that resonated most with children, he told The Times in 1999, were the ones inspired by his own life.

His grandmother and great-grandmother formed the basis for the characters in “Nana Upstairs and Nana Downstairs” (1973), one of his most famous books, which dealt with the death of each woman. The homecoming of his baby sister Maureen inspired “On My Way” (2001). His grandparents were from Calabria, the region in southern Italy where Mr. dePaola chose to set his “Strega Nona” books.

“Strega Nona” (1975) and its sequels tell the story of a kindly “grandma witch” who helps her fellow Calabrian townspeople with magic and an eternally full pasta pot, and her loyal helper, Big Anthony.

“De Paola’s illustrations aptly capture the whimsy of this ancient tale,” Norma Mauna Feld wrote in her review of the first book in The New York Times. “And while his simple line drawings clearly reveal the agony and ecstasy of pasta power, the muted colors create just the right ambience for a quaint Mediterranean village.”

That book went on to win the Caldecott Medal, which recognizes the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Thomas Anthony dePaola was born on Sept. 15, 1934, in Meriden, Conn. His father, Joseph, was a barber, and his mother, Florence (Downey) dePaola, was a homemaker.

He studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn — which named him “one of the top 125 Pratt icons of all time” in 2012, according to his website — and at the California College of Arts in Oakland and Lone Mountain College in San Francisco. He later taught in the art and theater departments of colleges in California, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Mr. dePaola was married briefly in the 1960s, but later in life he spoke openly about being gay.

“If it became known you were gay, you’d have a big red ‘G’ on your chest,” he said in a 2019 interview for T: The New York Times Style Magazine, “and schools wouldn’t buy your books anymore.”

Mr. dePaola’s “Oliver Button Is a Sissy” (1979), inspired by his own life, was the first picture book to come close to using the word “gay.” The book, about a young boy who is bullied by his peers for preferring dancing and reading to doing sports, was briefly banned by a suburban Minneapolis school, Mr. dePaola recalled in the 1999 interview, “because they felt it was anti-sport.”

Like Oliver Button, Mr. dePaola was a tap dancer when he was young. To the chagrin of his father, he insisted on dangling his tap shoes from his shoulder. But after he started performing, he added, his father took pride in his abilities.

Echoing Mr. dePaola’s experience, Oliver Button was rescued by an unknown helper who crossed out the word “sissy,” scribbled on a wall, and replaced it with another S-word: “star.”

“I was called sissy in my young life,” Mr. dePaola said in 1999, “but instead of internalizing these painful experiences, I externalize them in my work.”

Mr. dePaola received multiple awards, including the Smithson Medal from the Smithsonian Institution and the Kerlan Award from the University of Minnesota, and he was the United States nominee for the international Hans Christian Andersen Award in illustration in 1990. In 2011 he won the Children’s Literature Legacy Award, given by the Association for Library Service to Children, for his “substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.”

Despite almost universal admiration for Mr. dePaola’s books, some were briefly banned. Before “Oliver Button Is a Sissy” briefly met that fate, “Strega Nona” had been banned by a number of American libraries for painting magic in a positive light.

Later in life, Mr. dePaola lived and worked in a renovated 200-year-old barn with his beloved Welsh terriers, Madison, Markus, Morgan and Moffat. After his terriers died in around 2010, he got an Airedale named Bronte, who died several years ago.

According to his agent, Mr. Whiteman, the book Mr. dePaola was working on when he passed was called “Where Are You, Bronte?”

In a Twitter post on Monday, Gov. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire described Mr. dePaola as “a man who brought a smile to thousands of Granite State children who read his books, cherishing them for their brilliant illustrations.”

Mr. dePaola is survived by two sisters, Maureen Rogers and Judie Bobbi. His older brother, Joseph, died in 1973.

In a 2002 interview with the website Reading Rockets, Mr. dePaola said he had known he would be an artist since he was 4.

“‘Oh, I know what I’m going to be when I grow up,’” he recounted telling his family. “‘Yes, I’m going to be an artist, and I’m going to write stories and draw pictures for books, and I’m going to sing and tap dance on the stage’.”

“And,” he added, “I’ve managed to do all those things.”

Shaquille O'Neal addresses controversial 'Tiger King' appearance - NBC News

Former NBA player Shaquille O'Neal has addressed his controversial cameo in Netflix's "Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness," a true crime docuseries about Oklahoma zookeeper Joseph Maldonado-Passage, stating that he is "not friends" with Maldonado-Passage and had "no idea any of that stuff was going on."

Maldonado-Passage, who is better known as Joe Exotic, is currently serving a 22-year sentence for planning a murder-for-hire plot targeting animal rights activist Carole Baskin and for more than a dozen wildlife violations, including killing five tigers.

"Listen, people are going to make their own opinions, but, again, I was just a visitor. I met this guy — not my friend. Don’t know him," O'Neal said of Exotic on the most recent episode of his podcast "The Big Podcast With Shaq." "Never had any business dealings with him, and I had no idea any of that stuff was going on.”

O'Neal, who has a known affinity for tigers, appeared in the first episode of "Tiger King," where he was seen touring the zoo and taking pictures with its animals. The series also showed a clip of the basketball star referencing his visit on TNT, where his is currently a sports analyst, during which he said "Shoutout to Joe Exotic" and announced he "got two more tigers."

This segment drew criticism from viewers and appears to contradict O'Neal's proclamation that he never had business dealings with Joe Exotic. NBC News has reached out to O'Neal for further clarification regarding whether he purchased tigers at Exotic's zoo.

O'Neal added that after his first visit, he went to the zoo once more before he discovered that Joe Exotic was "involved with all the stuff," upon which he "stopped going."

"I don't harm tigers," O'Neal said. "I love tigers. I love white tigers. Do I put donations to these zoos to help these tigers out? I do it all the time. Do I own tigers personally at my house? No."

"Tiger King" is currently the #1 most-watched Netflix program in the United States, with many viewers remarking that its bizarre storyline has provided a welcome distraction during the coronavirus outbreak. The show has not only gained the attention of celebrities like Kim Kardashian-West, but the notice of a Florida sheriff, who is asking for leads in the disappearance of Baskin's previous husband, Jack Donald Lewis.

Colton Underwood Says 'The Bachelor' And Cassie Randolph Helped Him Come to Terms With His Sexuality - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Colton Underwood’s sexuality became a big part of his season of The Bachelor. That’s because he was a virgin. He has since continued his relationship with Cassie Randolph. Now he is opening up about how the show and their relationship helped him come to terms with his sexuality after struggling.

Colton Underwood was a virgin on ‘The Bachelor’

Underwood’s season had a lot of references to him being a virgin. The season ended with him picking Randolph, but he refused to say whether they’ve had sex.

I know I’ve been very open and candid about my virginity,” he said on After the Final Rose. “But since there are two of us now in this relationship, it’s something that we’re going to keep to ourselves.”

Years later he’s still not interested disclosing that part of himself. “If you have a sex life, you typically never talk about it,” he told People. “People can take that however they want to at this point. But I’m respecting my values, and also the values of Cassie, my family and her family. We’re happy together. And people can assume whatever they want.”

Underwood used to question his sexuality

Underwood talked about struggling with being bullied in school. In high school people would call him gay, which made him question his sexuality.

“It was one of those things where you hear something so often, you start believing it,” he told People. “I thought, maybe I am gay. The captain of the football team should be having sex and drinking, right? But I wasn’t.”

He went on to explain how his background affected processing this. “I didn’t know who I was,” he continued. “And I come from an athletic family, so it was always, ‘Move on, you’re good.’ So that threw me off. In high school, when I was struggling with my sexuality, I’m not going to talk to my parents about it. So I internalized it.”

The former reality star acknowledged that these rumors were around during his season too. “Even while my season was airing, I battled the gay [rumors],”Underwood says. “They’d say, ‘he’s gay, he’s hiding it.’ No. But I’ve been there, done that now.”

He said the show helped him realize he’s straight

The former football player is now reflecting on how filming the dating show helped him with his struggle. He said it taught him something about his sexuality.

“[The show taught me] that I’m straight and I’m very, very attracted to Cassie [Randolph] and women — but it would have been OK if it would have been the other way too,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “I think that’s the biggest message I have for people.”

He continued to talk about what he wants others to take from his experience. “If anybody takes anything from this or is going through this, if I help one young man or one young woman go through something that they’re struggling with — to let them know that they’re not alone — then I consider the book, [The First Time: Finding Myself and Looking for Love on Reality TV,] a huge success,” Underwood said.

'Tiger King': Tampa Authorities Receive Slew of Tips on Cold Case Amid Netflix Frenzy - Hollywood Reporter

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister previously asked the public for new leads.

Tampa authorities on Tuesday confirmed tips have been rolling in daily concerning a cold case featured in the wildly popular Netflix docuseries Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister addressed local media regarding the disappearance of Jack Donald "Don" Lewis, saying the sheriff held a meeting on Monday regarding the case and will be reviewing “a lot of the evidence," Tampa's WFLA 8 news reports. The sheriff also said his office was getting at least six tips a day.

Chronister on Monday asked for new leads amid all the interest in the show; the1997 disappearance of Lewis is part of the series that revolves around the bizarre tale of Joseph Maldonado-Passage, aka "Joe Exotic," a former tiger-zoo owner who is currently in prison for a murder-for-hire plot.

A multimillionaire, Lewis was married to animal rights activist Carole Baskin, and together they ran a wildlife sanctuary in Tampa when he vanished in August 1997. Baskin has since spoken out about the Netflix documentary series and called it “disappointing.”

Maldonado-Passage, sentenced to 22 years after being convicted of trying to hire a hitman to murder Baskin, claims in Tiger King that Lewis was murdered and fed to his own wild cats.

Baskin denies the accusations. On Tuesday, the sheriff confirmed Baskin said her attorney told her to refuse a polygraph test, WFLA reported.

Authorities interviewed for the series say there was no evidence to support Maldonado-Passage's claim. There are currently no persons of interest.

Bravo's 'WWHL' Fans Say Seeing the Show Gave Them Comfort and a Sense of Normalcy - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen returned to Bravo on Monday, March 30 but with a pandemic change.

The series initially went on hiatus like many productions to reduce the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus). Cohen hosted his SiriusXM radio show from home and toyed with the notion of hosting WWHL from home too.

But on the day he announced WWHL from Home, he shared he also tested positive for coronavirus. In his message to fans, Cohen said, “As much as I felt like I could push through whatever I was feeling to do #WWHL from home, we’re putting a pin in that for now so I can focus on getting better.”

He’s rested, refreshed and looked … pretty normal

Fans were overjoyed to learn on Monday that Cohen would start hosting the show after recovering for 10 days. He looked rested, relaxed and completely like his old self when he appeared in the opening segment from his home office. He even had a little glass of rosé wine at his desk. Cohen pointed out he was doing the show from his home office. “Which is actually what the Clubhouse is based on, which is why it looks like I’m in my studio,” he shared. He even has a disco ball at home too.

“I first want to say, I’ve been so touched by the sweet messages I’ve gotten from all of you, I wanna thank you all so much,” he emphasized. “I am feeling a lot better and I am so eager to just get back to doing what we do best here at Watch What Happens Live.” Adding, “Which is to put on a show to make you smile at the end of the day.”

He joked about how the show was going to be low tech and that his guests were joining him virtually from their homes. Each guest appeared via satellite from their own “home offices.” Jerry O’Connell showed up outside while hanging out next to his car.

The show gave fans a sense of normalcy

In an upsidedown world of COVID-19, fans are looking for anything that reminds them of normal life. A number of viewers remarked that seeing the Brady Bunch-style show layout certainly made them smile. Of course, the layout was a little different especially without the gregarious audience and bartender. Cohen also did an updated version of “Open the Vault” where his guests did their own “show and tell.”

Andy Cohen Instagram story

Actress Leslie Grossman tweeted, “Having @WWHL on tonight made me feel a little more normal during this scary time. Thank you @Andy for bringing the light when we need it. You looked great and I am thrilled you are on the mend.”

Another fan wrote, “Seeing @Andy @NeNeLeakes @lisarinna @MrJerryOC virtually together just made the quarantine a little more enjoyable.”

Podcaster Danny Pellegrino summed it up for everyone. “I honestly love how talk shows have stepped up to entertain us as best they can during this horrific time in history,” he tweeted along with a shot of the show.

Meghan Markle's Disney 'Elephant' debut panned by critics as 'shallow,' cheesy - Fox News

Meghan Markle's first post-royal gig as the narrator of Disney's upcoming documentary titled "Elephant" has been dubbed cheesy and "shallow" by critics ahead of its streaming debut.

Set to be released on Disney+ on April 3, a majority of film critics based in the United Kingdom rated "Elephant" three out of five stars, calling out the Duchess of Sussex's voice acting as overdramatized.

The documentary follows the journey of African elephants on an eight-month trek across the Kalahari Desert.

For The Times of London's Ed Potton, the former "Suits" star traded "pomp and circumstance for schmaltz and cheesiness."

"The silken tones that Meghan employed on the legal series 'Suits' and which were often muzzled during her time as a full-time royal are now given free rein," Potton wrote on Tuesday.

"And yes, she certainly has an actor’s way with a phrase and a likeable sense of mischief. “Oh! Who did that?” she coos in mock disgust when one of the elephant calves breaks wind. The sense of performance, though, often feels overegged. Even the underwhelming moment in which the elephants rip some bark off a tree is presented like the announcement of the winner for best picture."

"Elephant" was directed by Alastair Fothergill, Mark Linfield and Vanessa Berlowitz, who all reportedly worked on director David Attenborough's "Planet Earth."

Overall, Potton said "Elephant" serves as a hint that "evidence-based nature documentaries" may be a thing of the past, as the Markle-lead documentary "feels a bit shallow."

Meanwhile, Variety critic Owen Gleiberman called the theme of "Elephant" "rather dry" for a flick intended to shed light on the species' risk of ivory poaching.

Gleiberman described Markle's narration as "an inviting version of the wholesome but amused Disney narrator singsong."

Empire's Ian Freer said Markle's narration came off as 'over-eager to please" with dramatizations. Freer said, though, that the Duchess managed to stay on "the right side of annoying."

Film critic Robbie Collin of The Telegraph called Markle was a "fine fit" as the documentary narrator, stressing that the documentary is geared toward a young audience.

"If you're home-schooling at present, consider your Friday morning's activities taken care of," Collin, who gave the doc three stars, wrote.

Markle reportedly accepted the voiceover gig in return for a donation to Elephants Without Borders, a non-profit organization in Botswana that aims to protect the species from poaching.

Markle reportedly landed the role after her husband, Prince Harry, talked up Meghan's interest in narrating a project to Disney's then-CEO Bob Iger at the London premiere of "The Lion King" last July.

In a video obtained by the Daily Mail, Harry is seen approaching Iger about Meghan doing voiceover work. "You know, she does voiceovers," Harry could be heard saying to Iger, 68, as the prince pointed to his wife.

"Oh really, I did not know that," Iger said.

"She's really interested," said Harry.

"We'd love to try," Iger responded.

"Elephant" will serve as Markle's first entertainment gig after she and Harry announced their plans to step back as senior members of the royal family. The couple will no longer hold an official office at Buckingham Palace come April 1, according to reports.

Harry and Meghan bid farewell on last day as British royals - NBC News

LONDON — Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, came to the end of their roles as working British royals on Tuesday, bidding farewell to fans on their official Instagram account, adding that "while you may not see us here, the work continues."

The couple stunned the public in January, when they announced they intended to "step back" from the royal family, divide their time between the United Kingdom and North America and start paying their own bills.

"Thank you to this community — for the support, the inspiration and the shared commitment to the good in the world. We look forward to reconnecting with you soon. You’ve been great!" the couple wrote online.

Earlier this month, the pair returned to the U.K. from their base on Vancouver Island, Canada, for their final engagements as senior royals. Surrounded by Harry's immediate family, it marked the end of the couple's short era, which saw them go from being embraced to rejected by some parts of the British media and public.

According to supporters, they were driven out by toxic press coverage, which often veered into racist harassment and bullying, while others say the couple were hardly the first royals to get a rough ride in the media.

When Harry and Meghan married on May 19, 2018, to much fanfare at Windsor Castle, Meghan was hailed for modernizing the monarchy.

After the birth of their son Archie in 2019, the couple made no secret of the fact they felt the strain of the constant media attention and negative headlines.

Harry said the decision to step back was not one he had made lightly and had brought him "great sadness that it has come to this." While Queen Elizabeth said in a statement that "Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family."

Their new role, independent of the royal family, will be reviewed next year. Meanwhile the couple will no longer carry out official duties for the queen and won't use their royal highness titles or the word "royal" in the nonprofit organization they intend to establish. As yet, they have said little about the causes they intend to focus on.

March 28, 202000:39

Although he is stepping away from royal duties, Harry will remain sixth in line to the throne, behind his father, brother, and William's children.

Last week it was announced that former actress Meghan would return to the small screen in her first post-royal project as the narrator of a new film about a family of elephants journeying across Africa, set to stream on Disney+ in early April.

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted on Sunday that the U.S. would not provide security for Harry and Meghan. A spokesperson for the couple said they would use privately funded security arrangements.

In their final message online, the couple also paid heed to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic stating that "the world at this moment seems extraordinarily fragile" and that they would be searching for ways to "understand how we can best contribute."

Harry's father Prince Charles tested positive for COVID-19 last week and on Monday Clarence House confirmed that the 71-year-old had completed his period of self-isolation.

Meghan Markle's Disney debut gets a drubbing from critics - Daily Mail

Meghan Markle's Disney debut gets a drubbing from critics: Narration of Elephant documentary is branded 'over-eager to please' and packed with 'schmaltz and cheesiness'

  • Disney documentary is Duchess of Sussex's first gig after quitting Royal Family
  • She and Prince Harry officially step down from royal duties today (March 31)
  • Disneynature documentary will start streaming on April 3 on new Disney+
  • Reviews are mixed, with some critics claiming Meghan's voiceover is 'cheesy'

Meghan Markle's performance as narrator of a documentary about elephants has been branded 'over-eager to please' and packed with 'schmaltz and cheesiness' by critics.

The Duchess of Sussex, who officially steps down as a senior member of the Royal Family today with Prince Harry, provided the voiceover to the Disney production after a direct request from filmmakers.

It is understood she recorded it in London last autumn after seeing footage of the documentary, which will start streaming on Disney+ on April 3.

It sees African elephant Shani and her spirited son Jomo as they are led by their great matriarch, Gaia, across the Kalahari Desert. They face dwindling resources and vicious predators as they try to follow their ancestor's footsteps to a green paradise.

Reviews from British and US press have been relatively consistent, with critics awarding it an average of three stars and praising its stunning cinematography as it follows a family of elephants travelling 1,000 miles from Botswana's Okavango Delta to the Zambezi and Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe Zambia border.

When it comes to Meghan, her 'excitable tones' are a 'perfect fit for the natural-history-with-the-edges-shaved off remit', according to Empire's Ian Freer, who awarded the film three stars.

'For her part, Markle's delivery of the commentary is wholesome and over-eager to please,' he added, citing some of her vocal observations such as: 'It's time for a pool party!' when the elephants take a mud bath.

He added that the duchess 'just about stays the right side of annoying'.

The Telegraph's Robbie Collin, who awarded it three stars, said the documentary is 'not quite Attenborough', admitting Meghan's 'honeyed alto' is 'a fine match for the tone of the piece, which vacillates between regal and cutesy-poo with occasional gusts of girl-power uplift'.

What the critics say

The Times (two stars): 'Meghan Markle is swapping pomp and circumstance for schmaltz and cheesiness... The sense of performance, though, often feels overegged.'

The Guardian (three stars): 'Meghan takes to Disney-narration like an anthropomorphic duck to water.'

The Telegraph (three stars): '[Meghan] turns out to be a fine match for the tone of the piece, which vacillates between regal and cutesy-poo with occasional gusts of girl-power uplift.'

Variety (no rating): 'Meghan Markle does an inviting version of the wholesome but amused Disney narrator singsong.'

Empire (three stars): 'Markle's delivery of the commentary is wholesome and over-eager to please.'

The Express (four stars): 'Meghan comes across very warmly, with most of her lines sounding like she’s beaming fondly at the elephants we’re watching... At times this can be a bit cheesy and sentimental in a classic American Disney kind of way.'

The Times's Ed Potton was decidedly more scathing - evident by his two-star rating.

He said Meghan is 'swapping pomp and circumstance for schmaltz and cheesiness', adding: 'The departing Duchess of Sussex narrates Disney's tale of a herd of elephants crossing the Kalahari Desert from the Okavango delta to the Zambezi River, and boy does she lay it on thick.'

Ed observed how her 'silken tones' employed on the legal drama Suits which were 'often muzzled during her time as a full-time royal' are now 'given free rein'.

He did concede that she has an 'actor's way' with a phrase and a 'likeable sense of mischief', but concluded the performance often feels 'overegged'.

'Even the underwhelming moment in which the elephants rip some bark off a tree is presented like the announcement of the winner for best picture,' Ed deduced.

'To anyone raised on Attenborough's urbane authority... it all feels a little bit shallow.'

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw, who awarded Elephant three stars, was more complimentary, claiming Meghan takes to Disney-narration 'like an anthropomorphic duck to water'.

At times, he says, she injects 'torrents of schmaltz', not helped by the 'outrageously unverifiable' things she is given to say.

Variety's Owen Gleiberman said Meghan does 'an inviting version of the wholesome but amused Disney narrator singsong', while the Daily Express' George Simpson, who gave it four stars, said the duchess 'comes across very warmly, with most of her lines sounding like she's beaming fondly at the elephants we're watching'

He concluded the documentary is a 'technically impressive work with some lovely images - and a bit of a sugary taste'.

He said the duchess' added tension at the right moments, especially when the herd came across more serious moments like being surrounded by lions and hyenas, but at times it tips over into 'cheesy and sentimental in a classic American Disney kind of way'.

Meghan's fee for the project is going entirely to the Elephants Without Borders charity - an organisation dedicated to conserving wildlife and helps protect the animals from poaching.

Last year the duchess joked that she and Harry attended the premiere of The Lion King in London, to 'pitch' for work, footage from the event revealed.

Prince Harry was also filmed touting his wife's voiceover skills to Disney boss Bob Iger at the occasion in July.

In the shocking video, Prince Harry pointed to his wife and said: 'You do know she does voiceovers?' A surprised Mr Iger replies: 'I did not know that', before Harry continues: 'You seem surprised, she's really interested'.

The Disney boss says: 'We'd love to try. That's a great idea,' while Meghan, who was next to Prince Harry, continues speaking to Beyonce.

Meghan gave up a successful career as an actress - with her most prominent role being is US legal drama Suits - when becoming engaged to Prince Harry in 2017.

But the arrangement with Disney hints at Meghan's future career plans, which could see the couple use their celebrity status to benefit chosen causes.

Last month it was revealed that Meghan could make $100 million this year if she accepts all the offers that come her way, media executive Simon Huck has claimed.

Speaking to The Morning Toast Simon, 36, from Canada, owner of the public relations firm Command Entertainment Group, claims his agency was 'flooded' with 'huge' offers of work for the former actress in the wake of Megxit.

Simon, who is a close friend of Kim Kardashian, is not believed to be representing Meghan, but has been inundated regardless.

Meanwhile, bosses of The Simpsons have revealed they want the duchess to appear in their popular comedy.

The programme's showrunner and executive producer Al Jean discussed the prospect of the cameo in an interview with the Radio Times, and said Meghan should 'give him a call' about the idea.

He revealed: 'We've talked about Harry and Meghan. I hear she wants to do voiceover work. So if they’re reading this, give us a call.'

Ladbrokes revealed Meghan and the documentary are at 20/1 to win the Feature Length Documentary category at next year's Oscars.
