Prince Harry confirmed in October 2019 that rumors of a feud between him and brother Prince William were true — and now his friend, journalist Tom Bradby, who accompanied the Sussexes during their royal tour of South Africa, shares more details about their feud. Royal fans think the dispute has everything to do with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s announcement that they are taking a “step back” from the royal family and their duties.
Prince Harry’s friend dished on the feud
Bradby was involved with the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey and famously interviewed the couple, who revealed how difficult their life in the spotlight has been. During the interviews, Prince Harry admitted that he and William have been feuding.
Bradby spoke with Good Morning Britain about the rumored feud, noting: “There’s a lot going on within the royal family and I’m not sure they know what their future’s going to be… There are lots of people who would love there to be, including, I think, the brothers themselves, love them to be closer again. And with any luck that will happen.”
He added: “But with families, we all know stuff happens, things are said.”
Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan added, “And having a family dispute in public can’t be easy.”
Bradby agreed, sharing, “And also a family dispute within a family firm” is also in the mix, adding, “You are working in a big family firm, everyone has their wishes and desires and ambitions and if they have to be balanced up and it’s very hard.”
Did Prince Harry and Prince William start feuding over Harry and Markle’s desire to leave their royal duties?
The timing of this discussion has some royal fans wondering if the dispute between the brothers started when Prince Harry expressed a desire to leave the royal life behind.
During the documentary, Prince Harry shed some light on what had happened between him and Prince William — and taking a look again at his comments may offer clues that indicate the disagreement was possibly about Prince Harry’s future.
During Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Prince Harry shared: “Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it’s under… inevitably, you know, stuff happens.”
Prince Harry continued: “But, look, we’re brothers. We’ll always be brothers. We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and, as I know, he will always be there for me.”
He added at the time: “We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy, but I love him dearly. The majority of stuff is created out of nothing.”
Despite the differences, Prince Harry assured they aren’t much different than other families, noting: “But as brothers, you have good days and you have bad days.”
Prince William’s reported reaction to the news is revealing
While Prince Willam hasn’t issued a statement about Prince Harry and Markle ‘s announcement, it’s being reported that he’s “frustrated” with Prince Harry.
A source told Entertainment Tonight: “William is understandably frustrated by his brother’s decision,” adding, “Many family members were very disappointed with the Sussexes.”
Royal expert Katie Nicholl shared, “I’m told privately that William is absolutely devastated and quite shocked by this decision for Harry to step down from the royal family.”
Nicholl added: “I have been told by very credible Palace sources that there were discussions over Christmas when the Sussexes were in Canada. They were in touch with the senior members of the royal family, the queen, the Prince of Wales, and the Duke of Cambridge and this idea of a transition of a change to their roles of them stepping back as senior royals was something that was being discussed, but this was very early-stage discussions. Nothing had been signed off, nothing had been decided upon, and the idea was that it was going to be developed, talked about, a strategy would be worked out and then an announcement would be made.”
The fact that the Sussexes didn’t appear to follow any strategy and made their announcement didn’t go over well with William, as Nicholl noted: “I think William feels a sense of betrayal by his brother and possibly a sense of being abandoned too. While Meghan and Harry weren’t the top tier of royals and by that I mean they are not a future king and queen, you know their importance in the royal family is to not be underestimated. They are hugely valuable.”
