Ed Asner, star of Lou Grant and Up, dies at 91 - Sydney Morning Herald

Ed Asner, the star of television series Lou Grant and The Mary Tyler Moore Show who moonlighted as a political activist against US President Ronald Reagan’s policy on Central America, has died. He was 91.

“We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully,” a tweet from Asner’s official Twitter account said Sunday, US time. “Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head – goodnight dad. We love you.”

A cause for death was not given.

Asner continued to appear in TV shows, such as The Good Wife and Bones, even in the last years of his life. In 2019, Asner played a retiree who gave life advice in the Netflix show Dead to Me, which stars Christina Applegate. A new generation of moviegoers was introduced to Asner as the voice of curmudgeon Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar-Disney 2009 animated hit Up.

Asner won more Emmy awards – seven in total – than any other man, mainly for his supporting role on the comedy series The Mary Tyler Moore Show and the lead as a newspaper editor in the drama Lou Grant. He was also the only person to win Emmys for playing the same character – Lou Grant was a spinoff from The Mary Tyler Moore Show – in both a comedy and a drama. He won the Screen Actors Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

After Asner delivered the line “I hate spunk!” on the first Mary Tyler Moore Show, in which he portrayed the heavy-drinking boss of an aspiring TV news producer, the character of Grant began to take on a life of its own. In 1977, CBS commissioned a one-hour drama that followed Grant as the editor of the fictional Los Angeles Tribune, tackling social and ethical issues such as child abuse, nuclear weapons and conflicts of interest. The Lou Grant show won 13 Emmy awards.

Political activism

Asner’s public support for providing medical aid to rebels fighting the US-backed regime in El Salvador in the early 1980s led to the show’s demise. Sponsors Kimberly-Clark, Vidal Sassoon and Cadbury withdrew their advertisements from the program, and Lou Grant was cancelled two weeks later. The actor, who travelled with bodyguards after receiving death threats over the issue, attributed the network’s decision to chairman William Paley’s close relationship to President Reagan.

“Most insiders seem to think that the show would not have been cancelled had it not been for the controversy that arose over my stand on El Salvador,” Asner said in an interview with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation. “I thought at the time that I’d never work again.”

A member of the Democratic Socialist Organising Committee, Asner also picketed with 11,000 striking air-traffic-control workers in 1981 in their dispute with the Reagan administration over more pay and a reduced 32-hour working week. He was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild in the same year and served in that role until 1985. The guild had been a springboard for Reagan, who was SAG president for seven terms, in his future political career as California governor and US president.

Acting career

Edward David Asner was born on November 15, 1929, in Kansas City, the youngest of five children to Russian Orthodox Jewish parents.

After military service in the early 1950s, Asner joined the Playwrights Theatre Company in Chicago before moving to New York where he worked on Broadway. He had parts in the television dramas Decoy and Stoney Burke as well as Mission Impossible before taking on the character of Lou Grant.

Asner’s other Emmy awards were for his role as Axel Jordache, a harsh father in a dysfunctional family, on the mini-series Rich Man, Poor Man and as a ship’s captain transporting enslaved Africans in the mini-series Roots. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 2003.

In 2009, he starred as the voice of Carl Fredricksen in Pixar’s award-winning animated film Up.

Asner was married twice. He had three children to Nancy Sikes, a stepson with Cindy Gilmore and a son to girlfriend Carol Vogelman.

Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Jamaican reggae and dub icon, dies aged 85 - ABC News

Lee "Scratch" Perry, the wildly influential Jamaican singer and producer who pushed the boundaries of dub reggae, has died at the age of 85.

"My deep condolences to the family, friends, and fans of legendary record producer and singer, Rainford Hugh Perry OD, affectionately known as 'Lee Scratch' Perry," Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said in a tweet.

The Jamaica Observer reported Perry died on Sunday morning at a hospital in Lucea. No cause of death was given.

A producer for a wide array of artists including Bob Marley, Perry's influence traversed time and genre.

He gained fame both in Jamaica and abroad, especially in Britain, drawing acclaim for his inventive production, studio wizardry and eccentric persona.

Born on March 20, 1936 in the rural Jamaican town of Kendal, Perry left school at age 15, moving to Kingston in the 1960s.

"My father worked on the road, my mother in the fields. We were very poor. I went to school … I learned nothing at all. Everything I have learned has come from nature," Perry told British music paper NME in 1984.

"When I left school there was nothing to do except field work. Hard, hard labour. I didn't fancy that. So I started playing dominoes. Through dominoes I practised my mind and learned to read the minds of others."

"This has proved eternally useful to me."

He began selling records for Clement Coxsone Dodd's sound system in the late 1950s, while also cultivating his own recording career.

Perry broke ranks with Dodd over personal and financial conflicts, moving to Joe Gibbs's Amalgamated Records before also falling out with Gibbs.

In 1968, he formed his own label, Upsetter Records. His first major single, People Funny Boy — a jibe at Gibbs — was praised for its innovative use of a crying baby recording, an early use of a sample.

In 1973, Perry built a backyard studio in Kingston, naming it the Black Ark.

The studio went on to birth countless reggae and dub classics.

Adept at layering rhythm and repetition, Perry became a sampling grandmaster whose work created new courses for music's future.

The producer for a number of landmark dub records — along with Marley, he worked with Max Romeo, Junior Murvin and The Congos — Perry was key in taking Jamaican music to the international stage, crafting sounds that would endure for decades.

'Salvador Dali of music'

Perry's layering techniques were the stuff of legend; he used stones, water and kitchen utensils to create surreal, often haunting, sonic density.

Legend has it he created drum effects by burying a mic at the base of a palm tree, and wove the sound of marijuana smoke blown into a mic into his works.

"You could never put your finger on Lee Perry — he's the Salvador Dali of music," Keith Richards told Rolling Stone in 2010.

"He has a gift of not only hearing sounds that come from nowhere else, but also translating those sounds to the musicians. Scratch is a shaman."

Perry was a highly sought-after producer, with the likes of Paul McCartney recording with him.

He continued to mix and release his own music with his band the Upsetters, but began suffering mentally in the 1970s.

The Black Ark fell into disrepair, and ultimately burned down; Perry claimed he set it ablaze himself in the early 1980s.

Perry began travelling and living abroad, ultimately settling in Switzerland for a time with his family, and remained prolific until his death.

"Pure Innovation. Pure Imagination. This Man Was Plug Ins long before you studio cats today can simply press one button and instantly created sound chaos," wrote Roots drummer Questlove.

"What a character! Totally ageless! Extremely creative, with a memory as sharp as a tape machine! A brain as accurate as a computer!" wrote the British artist Mad Professor, Perry's longtime collaborator.

Praising Perry's "pioneering spirit and work," the Beastie Boys also tweeted an homage: "We are truly grateful to have been inspired by and collaborated with this true legend."

Kanye West’s Donda album is released but claims Universal did it without his permission. - PerthNow

After countless delays, Kanye West’s long-awaited album Donda has finally been released but he claims his record label did it without his permission.

After public listening sessions, which included a surprise appearance from his estranged wife Kim Kardashian wearing a wedding gown, West’s album Donda finally dropped last night.

The album features The Weeknd, Young Thug, Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, a posthumous appearance from the late Pop Smoke and a surprise appearance from superstar Ariane Grande.

But despite the release date being shifted countless times, having first being tipped for release in late July, West is far from pleased with the timing.

The rapper has accused Universal of making his 10th studio album available on streaming services including Spotify and Apple Music without his approval.

“UNIVERSAL PUT MY ALBUM OUT WITHOUT MY APPROVAL AND THEY BLOCKED JAIL 2 FROM BEING ON THE ALBUM,” he fumed to his 7.8 million followers.

Jail, Pt. 2 features controversial rapper DaBaby and rocker Marilyn Manson, who has been accused of abuse by a number of women, including his ex-fiance Evan Rachel Wood.

Initially, all but one song was released, with Jail, Pt. 2 being added hours later on Sunday, with DaBaby spitting about the homophobic comments he made about HIV and AIDS at Rolling Loud Festival.

The lyrics read:

Referring to his failed bid to become President of the United States, Kanye wrote back to his manager Abou 'Bu' Thiam: “[DaBaby] was the only person who said he would vote for me in public.”

West also seemingly messaged DaBaby saying: “They tried to stop you from coming in.

“The people next to you trying to destroy you. But God gotta bigger plan. (sic)”

To which he replied: “A plan that can’t be stopped!!”

It comes as West has asked the court to legally change his name to Ye, an abbreviated version of his nickname Yeezy.

Brutal reality of The Voice format change - NEWS.com.au

If viewers of The Voice thought ‘The Cut’ was a brutal segment, just wait until you see the harsh reality of the new ‘Knockouts’.

Sunday night’s episode of The Voice was all about the ‘Knockouts’: now that the coaches had trimmed their teams down to only five members after ‘The Cut’, they were all set to perform live.

Unfortunately, the coaches then needed to get rid of a further three members from each of their teams.

The episode saw coach Keith Urban’s team members go up against Guy Sebastian’s, and in another Voice first, the coaches were given three options after hearing their team sing: Send them straight through to the finals, put them out of their misery and send them straight home or make them wait until the end of the night to make their final decision.

While Keith made most of his team wait (save for Arlo, who was sent straight through to the finals after singing a Billie Eilish song), Guy sent his members home right after their performance.

After getting a major makeover, Guy’s team member Adrian Hood sang his heart out to Try A Little Tenderness. While he rocked it, Guy wasted no time in sending him home. At least he got a groovy haircut out of it...

The same was said for Penelope Pettigrew, who Guy made sing a song by fellow Voice coach Jessica Mauboy, This Ain’t Love.

With the nerves getting to her, Guy couldn’t foresee the kind of future she would have if he were to sign her to a record label straight away. With that lack of vision, Guy sent her home too.

Ouch.

In the end, Guy chose to go through to the final shows with contestants Bella Taylor-Smith and Jordan.

Keith will be taking Arlo and Lau.

Some fans may be upset by this new format, as they first expressed their disappointment after ‘The Cut’.

“This format doesn’t allow for us to connect with the contestants. Couldn’t care less who wins when people are dumped after a 10 second sound bite,” one person wrote on social media.

“This whole cut experience was so sh***y, they got rid of so many people who we had all grown to love and we barely had time to see them go,” another said.

“The ‘cut’ was grossly unfair and terrible TV. So disappointing for viewers,” another remarked.

The Voice continues on Channel 7 on Monday night at 7:30pm.

Celebrities have paid tribute to Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman on the one year anniversary of his tragic death.

Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther co-star Lupita Nyong’o along with other celebrities honoured the late actor on the one-year anniversary of his tragic death.

Hollywood’s biggest names – many of whom personally worked with the Oscar nominee – paid tribute after he passed away from colon cancer at the age of 43 in 2020, The Sun reports.

Among the famous names to honour Chadwick was Lupita, 38, who played Nakia alongside her pal’s King T’Challa.

She shared a never-before-seen snapshot of the duo laughing in a hallway backstage at a press event.

As Chadwick looked at Lupita with a big smile, she is seen cracking up in return with her hand placed on his leg.

“I did not know that I could miss both his laughter and his silence in equal measure. I do. I do …

“One year after his passing, the memory of @chadwickboseman remains this alive in me,” she captioned the post.

Their Black Panther co-star, Michael B. Jordan, also paid homage to the action star with a picture of them smiling together.

He wrote: “Not a day goes by bro … Love and miss you but I know you still with us.”

Viola Davis, 56, who was cast mates with Chadwick in the Oscar-winning film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, posted a behind-the-scenes image of the duo in costume.

“This day last year you left this earth and us. Man you are missed,” she said.

Another famous name who paid tribute was Kevin Hart, 42, who posted a picture on his Instagram where Chadwick joined his family court side at a basketball game.

The comedic actor captioned it: “Legends never die …. rest in paradise KING!!!!!”

Actor Josh Gad wrote a heartfelt note on Twitter, saying: “Not a day goes by one year later, where it doesn’t still hurt.

“But in the darkness, he always reminds us of the light. He was an angel on this planet and is now a Saint on high.

“Love you and miss you more than ever … forever.”

Kerry Washington shared a picture of Chadwick at the Oscars doing his famous Black Panther stance and said: “One year without Chadwick Boseman. Thank you for watching over us. We miss you King.”

Mark Ruffalo said of his Marvel co-star: “Can’t believe how fast time has gone. Thinking of you today.”

While the Disney-owned film studio tweeted: “Honouring our friend, our inspiration and our King, Chadwick Boseman.”

Last August, his family confirmed the beloved movie star’s tragic passing and revealed he had first been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2016 – two years before the release of The Black Panther.

The disease escalated to stage 4 over the last four years, his family said.

“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much.

“From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wildson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy,” the statement said of the star’s private health struggle.

Prior to his death, Chadwick – who is survived by his wife Taylor Simone Ledward – had not publicly spoken about his illness.

However, his bravery and strength off-screen has left even a bigger legacy than his heroic on-screen characters.

Model Jennifer Hawkins and her builder husband Jake Wall have demolished their property at Whale Beach, NSW, after being granted approval to build a $3million mansion in its place.

The property, known as Rocca Bella, was previously owned by Dame Joan Sutherland and is the largest oceanfront estate on the Northern Beaches.

Photos published by The Daily Telegraph show the property completely razed to a pile of dirt, which will soon become a sandstone-clad mansion.

Making the most of their 3070sqm area, the couple plan to build a three-storey home panning half of the 50m frontage.

Jennifer and Jake had been forced to amend plans for the mammoth renovation after their initial plans were rejected following objections from neighbours.

Their home was finally reportedly approved by the Northern Beaches Council last week.

The approved plans include the demolition of the existing house, replacement of the tennis court with a basketball court, and the construction of an infinity pool and four-car garage.

The couple snapped up the $6.9million mansion last September with plans to turn it into a modern estate with designer gardens.

But neighbours complained about the proposed height of their trees, fearing their enviable ocean views would be jeopardised.

The pair's landscaper, Michael Cooke, had to reportedly replace several towering trees with smaller ones to try and keep the couple's neighbours happy.

The spacious home is set on 3,100sqm of land with expansive ocean and coastal views.

In August last year, she and Jake sold their Newport mansion for a record-breaking $24.5million, to Atlassian co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes.

The couple built the property on land they'd purchased for $4million in 2014.

However, Jennifer has always been adamant that she and her partner are not 'property flippers', and firmly explained so in an interview with David 'Kochie' Koch on Sunrise in 2020.

Jennifer first entered the property market in 2006, two years after she was crowned Miss Universe.

The beauty first forked out $469,000 for a double-storey house in Merewether, a suburb located in her home city of Newcastle.

She leased out the three-bedroom, two-bathroom property for much of the time it was in her name, before she eventually sold the residence for $782,000 in 2017.

Clearly bitten by the real estate bug, savvy Jennifer added two properties to her portfolio in 2007.

In January of that year, she bought another home in Newcastle's Merewether area for the sum of $620,000.
